My new truck is scheduled to arrive at the dealer no later than 2-2-04. One of the first things I need to do is have my goose neck B&W hitch installed. What I was wondering was what brake controller would you folks recommend, I will be pulling a four horse sooner trailer.

Check out the BrakeSmart controller. It is fully proportional like the Jordan, but uses a hydraulic sensor instead of a cable to sense brake pressure. It's a bit pricey at $350. I ordered one and have it sitting on the shelf waiting for the truck to arrive. The install kit is totally plug-in-play. No splicing at all. The unit and install kit appear very high quality. I have not used one yet, but feedback from other owners is very positive.

Prodigy

I don't know it it is the best or not because I have not tried the others, but the Prodigy stops my 15K Teton to my satisfaction. I would recommend it to anyone.

I have had the Prodigy for 9 months now and I use it on three different trailers and I am very pleased with performance and ease of adjusting when switching trailers.

I had the Prodigy in my '99 and was pleased with the performance.

I put the slightly more expensive Tekonsha Sentinel on my '03. My first impression was that it was a little less "grabby", but I have a habit of running the brakes a little tighter than I probably should.

I haul as many as 4 horses in my 3 horse with the rear tack removed, and also different pieces of equipment on a tri-axle equipment trailer.

For around $100 both performed equally well in my opinion.

The Jordan Ultima. Once you set it - and you do that while you're stopped - there are no more adjustments to make. Works perfectly and your trailer and truck stop together as one unit - just like a semi.

I've had the BrakeSmart unit for the last 35,000 miles and it is hands down the best I've used. I have used all the controllers listed on this post except the Jordan unit. All the controllers will stop you, but for smoothness, and if you are hauling horses you need that, the BrakeSmart unit is the best I've used. It sends power to your trailer brakes in coordination with the pressure you put on your master cylinder. Everything stops together. I pull a trailer for a living and it's the best I've used.

I ordered a prodigy on the Amazon auction , $89 including shipping. Also found out today my truck was built 3 days early and is already headed to texas for the railcar ride up hear. :D

I think after looking at all the input, it's down to (in order) Brakesmart, Jordan or Prodigy I will do more research and render a decision.

I can't possibly thank you all enough for all the help you have been.

Steve

PS. I can't believe I misspelled my own first name in the earlier post.

It's mounted by my right knee. Will post a picture of it tomorrow. I run it on the setting that shows the brake pressure, amps going to the brakes and what the alternator is putting out. There are a number of base settings, but that is the one I use.

Here is the first of two pictures, the first shows the unit as it looks going down the road, the second, the unit with some braking pressure applied. Sorry about the dirty floorboard, just got off a run and it's pretty muddy where I went. For all you people in the NE, it's 65 and raining here.
