Guys,

I have a 2005 2500 club cab short bed, 6 speed manual 4x4, 157,000 miles with an Edge programmer. Other than that pretty stock. It is time for a clutch. Every parts store, aftermarket and dealer sells a different clutch. I dont need anything super heavy duty, but I want to put in a good clutch and not have to worry about doing it again. I remember one time reading an article in the TDR magazine about autozone or oreillys or one of the big chain stores carrying a good clutch for the money, but can not remember which store is was, or if it was for a 5 speed or 6 and for the life of me I cannot find which issue it was in.

Anybody have suggestions on a clutch to purchase, or for that matter what not to purchase?

Thanks,

Larry

Do you have an NV5600 or G56 trans? You will need to know that before you get a clutch and whatever else is needed. The DMF on the G56 is a different beast and requires more parts.

If your going to do it, do it right. Southbend clutch and whatever else is needed from them.

Agree. The Dodge dealer in Texas put in a auto parts store clutch and it failed in 40,000 miles. One of the springs from the friction plate came out and jammed things up. Put in a Southbend OFEK. So far, so good.

Call Peter at South Bend Clutch 800. 988. 4345, tell him what truck and make of transmission you have, how you are going to use it. He will tell you what clutch you need. Legendary customer service.

Godspeed,
Trent

I also recommend SBC, I have an Con-OFE in my 05 and love it.

My dad has an 06 with a little less power and he will be going with the Con-O clutch when its time.

Make sure you read the letter that the clutch comes with and have a good transmission shop set end play @ 0... then i recommend gorrilla juice for fluid.

My truck is pretty muck like yours except I have the AFE Air Intake and Filter. I just called SBC yesterday and talked to Peter (first time) very good at explaining the products they have. He told me I needed the new G56 OK HD, just released as he told me the Distributors don't have it yet. The unit is available from SBC. This a single disc clutch they have been testing for about a year. Comes with the Hyd. upgrade Hydrx. 750Hydraulic Assy. So I am not going the dual disc route, will advise on this one after it is installed.

i agree on the southbend kit. you need to use one quart over full to lube and cool the front bearing for a total of 7 quarts of gorilla juice. just pore the last quart in the top when you go back in with the g56

Guys,

Just to let you know I had the southbend clutch installed last week. WOW I absolutely love it. Took all the vibration I was feeling out of the truck One thing is that boot that was on top of the transmission that goes around the shift lever was leaking. $159 from MOPAR, bigger problem was that I was 222nd in line if I wanted one with no projected ship date and no supplier listed. Parts guy at the dealer said "sir, you are not getting one of those. Dont waste your time. " So a quick search of the internet and I had a boot ordered from Pure Diesel Power out of Wisconsin (might be the same one from AutoZone?) for $30. All is good... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

Looking forward to hearing about this one too. My Fluidamper smoothed out my idle noticeably, but did nothing for the minimal gear noise I have after chucking the DMF. Gorilla Juice in mine made shifting way too stiff in the morning here and it doesn't get that cold. Way too thick IMO.

I put an NAPA clutch kit in my 99 5spd a few years back and they have a good warrente which is worth nothing as I put the clutch in myself. The kit is made in china and it drives like that!!! I would use SBC if I were to do it over and make it right the first time!

I just installed the newest version of the street dual disk in mine. (SDD3250-6K) I can't get over how smooth it is. My truck had a nearly new OEM clutch that was in it when I bought it. It barely held with the TST turned off and it always had a little shudder. When I got it out and saw the horrible surface job on the flywheel, I understood why it was such junk. I'm in love with my new SBC. One side note is that my hydraulics were fine with the old clutch, but are not quite up to the new one. I will be ordering the upgraded hydraulics next week.

South Bend G56 OK HD Kit

Clutch kit has been ordered and will go in on the 10th or 11th of April. Price for this kit is 1225. 00 which includes the Hyd. Upgrade. Plus the installation cost of 450. 00. Will advise next week on the results.

Price Update on G56 OK HD

After the S B Clutch came in I found out the price was $1479. 25 that includes the Hydraulic Upgrade Kit. Just for clarification.

SBC is installed

To clear up the confusion on price, the G56 OK HD single disc clutch with the Hyd upgrade is 1225. 00 retail. My shop ordered the new dual disc clutch package, P/N # SDD 3250 GK, this clutch pkg with the Hyd upgrade is 1479. 00retail. To make along story short I ended up with the dual disc. clutch.

I like it, I like the feel and engagement, the new Hyd upgrade lets you make some adjustment too.

I do get a little bit more noise in the driveline than the dual mass flywheel.

The noise is not there in 1st through 3rd gear, 4th just a very small amount, 5th gear is where the noise is the most apparent then goes away in 6th gear.

I only have about 125 miles on it but you can tell that this clutch is not going to slip and will be doing it's job well past the 76,000 miles that I had on the stock clutch.

A better harmonic balancer will take care of the noise, make shifting smoother and get rid of the drone. Oo.
One thing always leads to another!

I'm curious, why didn't you just go with the ConOfe single disk?

Single vs Dual

The shop doing the installation ordered the wrong clutch, I didn't know it until after the install. So I got the dual disc for the single disc price, it was their mistake.
