I'm looking to put lights in the holes in the bottom of my front bumper and the Hella 550 model looks good to me. I'm reading the specs though and it says it lights up for a mile into the distance . This can't be street legal can it?

do you all know which ones are/aren't street legal?

Also, do you have any suggestions for lights in those holes?

You might want to check out the "CATZ" lights. They are listed over at the group purchase site. I can't advise as to their quality as I have factory fogs in truck. Here's the link...

azcummins,
I'm with you. I was just thinking about this yesterday. I own a set of Hella 550 Driving lights. I too am going to mount mine in the bumper, and I too am wondering about the oncoming drivers with a 5500' range.

What I am thinking of doing is installing the fog light lense on the 550's. You can order them with the fog light lense and they are the same price as the driving lights.

The range of the fog light lense is 500' and it spreads a wider pattern. I'm hoping this won't be too offensive to oncoming drivers. I'd like to keep the driving lens on, but I don't think I'd get to use them much because of the extreme intensity. And 500' is still a pretty decent range.

Keep me informed how the mounting goes. I don't plan on installing mine until it warms up around here.

I asked a few cops about this. seems like there is no hard rule. From what I've been told the standard is the lights shouldn't "dazzle" oncoming drivers. IE: driving with brights is illegal. Having your lights mis-aimed is illegal.

With fogs, the pattern is very flat. So if you aim them properly you should be able to use whatever lights you want.

I drive with 4 hella 4000's and run the 2 fogs all the time.
