My truck will put out a smoke cloud at 90 mph that will completely make a Ford PowerChoke disappear in the rear view mirror. I have the plate pushed back about . 020 from stock in a futile attempt to control exhaust temperatures. The CPL on this engine is 2308. I think that I may have the wrong plate in the engine because of the amount of smoke and hi exhaust temps that I get when I get on the go pedal. At 60mph and 650 degrees I can floor it and hit 1500 degrees in about 2 seconds. It pulls real hard but dang thats hot. I have been told by TST that I have the more tame pump because it was made for CA emissions. On the other hand Enterprise Engine told me that I am running the more aggressive pump. Does anyone have a book or access to one that can tell me for sure what pump I have based on CPL #2308?

Dieselburner,

I sure would like to know too, cause were running about the same set up.

By the way, I just had my pump balanced after I installed the high flow delivery valves. Let me tell ya it runs alot better, it's smoother more responsive and less smoke !

Dieselburner & Brian,

I thought I was pushing the envelope with the #8 in a 215 pump. Geeeez. A #5 & #4 in a 215 pump? Check out the table on this link:
http://www.dieselpage.com/tstpk.htm

I figure that a #8 centered in a 215 pump is 340hp, from the table. If you take the #10 & put it in the pump just 1 row up, it's 220hp. The #8 is 10 more hp or 340hp. The #5 is 50hp above the #10! Yoweeee #ad
That's 380hp centered. The same as the #8 3/4 of the way forward, approx. I don't know how much more hp the #4 is over the #5, but, you bet, smoke & EGT galore. #ad

I know this wont help you, but I have a 98 5 speed, and I'm 90% sure my CPL is 2175. You probibally have the different# because of it being a California truck. ?
I'd assume it's milder because of this. Sounds like you have way too much cam plate. I'd try disconnecting the wastegate to see if it improves.

Is it possible your truck has a pump from some other B5. 9 application like stationary power generation or fire pump etc. or even from a C8. 3?

You would think someone would be able to come up with your strange CPL?
