Went and got the camper out of storage, Wt. 10,000#, air temp about 75 comp on level 1. engine at operating temp. Had to wait a few min. for traffic to clear then pulled out on road at about half throttle. Huge cloud of white/gray smoke with a touch of black mixed in the cloud. It did this every time I had to stop and start again. It felt a little low on power but once turbo spooled it was not bad. It never did this last year when towing the same unit. any ideas what the problem might be?

I have been searching the posts, but have found nothing that relates to this.

I always get a cloud of black smoke when visiting my daughter in Colorado Springs. I have a pretty tight torque converter as it looks like you do, and this doesn't help. You might clean or replace the air filter and see if that helps.

Yes it only does this when pulling the camper. Checked for codes, when using the key method I get code 748 solenoid something (vp44?). When using a code reader I have no codes returned. Very strange.

I's suggest checking all the basics. Then start looking from there. I have seen diesels do some strange things due to maintenance issues. Not that you are abusing the thing... Just maybe things went south a bit faster than expected.

I would turn the Comp off and see what happens. It may be stuck on a much higher fuel setting than the LED indicates. You may be over fueling without realizing it. I had a problem with several of my past Comps losing power in settings 3-5. The wire tap function just stopped working. You may have a Comp gremlin and not realize it.

Replaced comp hotwire and gave the batt. termnials a good cleaning. Also left batt's disconnected for a few hours that cleared the 748 code. Will see what happens today. Have pulled the camper a few times since, seems OK But just feels a bit down on power. May try new air filter as soon as I can find one.
