Coming back from Rim Rock (steep 6%-7% for miles) camper (94 alpenlite 11. 6") towing the 4runner on the trailer, had been driving for about 3 hours at 70-80 mph and we pull off (with some speed and not a lot of cooling down time) to the rest area to the dump station and the dodge is blowing out some light (white) colored exhaust. Light exhaust not a ton of billowy white stuff. This continues until we accelerate and get back on the highway.

We had to pull off again about 12 miles up the road to re-secure one of the side storage compartments and again came off the freeway onto the ramp with some speed and again had a little white exhaust.

Truck is a 2002 cummins 3500 4x4 with about 12,000 miles on it, it has a Van AAken chip in it, aftermarket exhaust and a banks engine brake.

Under minimal load conditions (we've been hauling a lot (25-30) loads of mixed sand/gravel, straight sand, topsoil and pallets of sod for the past month or so and the most we see now is a light puff of black exhaust.

normal or abnormal?? our 2001 cummins had the same mods minus the engine brake and it never did that (white exhaust)... I doubt we hot-rod'd it like this truck tho...

What is wrong? or is this normal.

Whoa a 12Valver with a Piers cam and stage 1 porting, 370 injectors, and fuel plate #?, Pump timing, ATS manifold, 16cm housing. Towing up Rim Rock (steep 6%-7% for miles) camper (94 alpenlite 11. 6") towing the 4runner on the trailer, had been driving for about 3 hours at 70-80 mph And GET's never got over 1200 .....

You should see more than 1200 with that in tow up a 7% grade.

Could it be a compression issue? Fuel just ain't burnin completely.

Or if you were going Down Hill the motor even with the exhaust brake on was being pushed and prolly cylinder temps dropped below 210 degrees giving a washdown kind of effect being I see you have 370's. That'l whiten things up for ya.

Before I had my Exh brake In VT I coasted down the backside of smugglers notch and when I looked down the egt's were allmost 200. once it flattened out I gave her the pedal and the truck stumbled and belched grey pretty bad then cleared up (Changed the oil after that as I didn't want to take any chances even tho it didn't smell)

is your logic on this one that fuel starving causes white smoke?

YES, do you have the same problem?

nope. only black smoke. Not sure if that's a problem though.

I've seen many trucks run low on fuel pressures but never saw white smoke. I'll keep an eye out next time.

I don't want to Jinx your truck but it could be a bad Vp44. . :(

But most likely not. I think all of the 2002's have the upgraded pump

Evidently not:mad: My truck is back to stock form and the 0216 code will not stay gone.

I just am not showing any symptoms of the VP going out.

ISh

What's the word ISh? I just got back from pulling my jeep on the same sort of trip. I have pretty much the same symptoms. When I drive easy, I blow white smoke; When I punch it, I blow black smoke. I'm a little worried. TIA

Silver, Are you setting DTC's ?. Which ones? also I would check your injectors and pull them out to look at the Tips. Compare them for the same color and build up. Also look at the copper washers and the orings on the barrel. None of the washers should have a shoulder ring close to the center.

Thanks Kurt,

After replacing my lift pump, fuel filter, and air filter to no avail, I sat down for a couple of hours and read old posts. It turns out that the 3/4 in line I used to relocate my puke bottle had gotten soft and collapsed. I put the old puke bottle back on, and it solved the problem. I feel like an IDIOT! Do you think any damage was done?

I doubt that any damage was done. I would change your oil. I have seen alot of "BlowBy" Problems caused by just extending the oil breather tube too far. I would keep it SHORT. . Kurt
