Cougar,

I went with ATS and would do it again in a heartbeat. The people at ATS are a just good folk to deal with and they absolutely stand behind what they sell.

Edward

What a thread, 10 replys about which brand of automatic transmission to use before any one even knew if the Cougar even had an auto in his truck... Do you all get paid to for your transmission posts??

Me I have DTT, I like it and it works well for me. I don't tow and I don't race, I just drvie it like I stole it.

Good luck and find a good installer and you will be happy with what ever brand you choose.

At least I asked whether he wanted a stick or auto!

Cougar, since you have narrowed it down to ATS and DTT, I suggest you call both companies and spend a lot of time asking dumb questions. You will get a feel for which company is more in line with your way of thinking. Also, call TST in Columbus, which is not too far south of you. They have one of the better Diesel Shops in the country and are very knowledgeable about the Cummins and also ATS.

ATS is 800-949-6002

TST is 812-342-6741

How about asking a couple of well informed questions.

How come ATS ended up raising line pressures after saying that it was not needed?

How come DTT uses fluid coupling to get the truck moving instead of using lockup?

Why does ATS need a Billet TC cover?

What is 93% T/C all about?

Will I need Billet parts at all?

And finnaly, Why are all you guys cheering on ATS sooooo Much?

Interstingly enough if you go back and count the members cheerleading each transmission the count was 7-DT and 5-ATS..... so i suppose the question could be asked both ways right????[

Ok G. Boardman, several things here.

One; dumb questions are what we all ask, because none of us are Transmission Experts. The person who is afraid to ask a dumb question will miss critical info because he isn't up to speed with the basic questions.

Two; NOBODY uses lockup to get the truck moving. EVERY automatic ever made uses a fluid coupling to get the truck moving.

Three; ATS doesn't need a billet cover--I suppose Clint could use a stamped P. O. S. like the stock cover, like the other trans builders do. But that billet cover will last for Hundreds of Thousands of miles without deflecting, warping and ruining your day like the stock one can if you run bombed or tow hard.

Four; I post about ATS for several reasons. I have a building/construction background, with a little engineering school thrown in, and I was hugely impressed with Clint's approach to building the ATS Transmissions. Back when I was looking for a Performance Trans, I called and e-mailed them all and was most impressed with ATS. The fact that so many guys here have discovered just how good they are, is I believe, the reason for the rave reviews for ATS.

Greg,

Looks like the wolf pack is still around.

I would like to know more about the 93% too.

How did they come up with a percentage rating for TC's?

At what RPM did the TC make the 93%?

Was this test done on a truck or is there a machine that can duplicate a CTD on the road?

No cheering here. Just the facts. I think most of us are grown ups and can make decisions based information.

Wow,

Shy so tense??????:{

Ah well... sorry if I sounded tense to you Greg.

I am just tired of hearing ATS made fun of, or run into the ground.

I remember when certain "transmission Gurus" were saying that the ATS TripleLok wouldn't even work, or if by some miracle it did work, then it wouldn't last, or if by some miracle it did last, then drastic damages would occur in the trans--all of which turned out to be untrue! Sorry if I sounded a little brittle, but I am just tired of seeing a great company and a great product being put down.

By the way, I too would like to know how the 91 & 93% was measured.

No Harm No Foul Robert,

I was just pointing out that there are alot of reasonably informed questions to ask too.

I have to admit that the last one was a dig..... Sorry.

Wow! Another WARM trans thread! Gotta leave my 0. 02... ... Read my sig. I will never look back on my decision! WOOF!! or is that a HOWL?

Clay :D

Sorry for all the dumb questions but I didn't know. I think I will road trip it down to ATS it's 3 hours from the house. Thanks Cougar

Cougar,

Scheids also does ATS stuff (scheiddiesel.com), Terre Haute and Lafayette.

Haisley Machine in Fairmount does ATS (haisleymachine.com).

Bedels in Seymour Indiana (as I mentioned before) 812 523 8891,

Or TST in Columbus Indiana (TSTproducts.com).

Greg

If I may, could I add some other good questions to your list?

1. Does your torque converter need a feature that "Disengages lockup under full throttle" to " Prevents excess TC wear"?

2. The next follow-up question should be. Do locked clutches that aren't slipping wear?

3. Why do three of the four top transmission rebuilders mentioned on this sight use a billet front cover on their torque converters?

Edward

Edward, the purpose of the TC saver is not to prevent wear to the TC. There are several situations while towing that the advantage of unlocking the TC becomes evident. Like cresting a big hill with a heavy load, and the last couple of hundred yards, you don't want to slow up to catch the next lower gear, so with the TC saver, and the DTT converter, you can unlock the TC, raise the RPM's 200-300, and finish off the hill, let off the throttle and back to lockup you go. This is a true benefit while towing heavy.

As to why 3 out of 4 use billet covers, maybe they need them, maybe they don't. I know that the DTT converters I install do not, as they don't balloon, or fail, period. That sales pitch , is just that, a sales pitch.
