I get above 24 mpg frequently on the highway. 3 bests are

130 miles from VA to Charlotte on I77--- 27. 2mpg

350 miles from Charlotte to OBX I85,NC64---26. 1mpg

500 miles from Charlotte to N Pittsburgh I77,US19,I79---25. 3mpg(last 100+ miles was in 4wd)

The 2 best I had an EZ, and the third best no EZ.

FASS

FASS = Fuel Air Separation System

there's probably a detailed thread somewhere on here, but basically, it separates the air from the fuel and supplies the pump with "pure" diesel with no air. As you're driving down the road, the fuel is sloshing in the tank creating air bubbles (like you get in the filler neck after filling up) and the factory system doesn't remove the air before supplying the pump with fuel. So, the FASS removes all the air from the fuel. = better fuel economy.

There has been some controvercial feelings about the FASS because guys don't see a notible improvement on the dyno, BUT if you think about it, your fuel isn't sloshing on the dyno. ?.

Also the FASS provides a constant supply of fuel even at WOT (wide open throttle) If you hook up a Fuel Pressure gauge to a bone stock truck, you can kill the fuel pressure at WOT. With a FASS and some serious mods, it'll be hard to drop a couple psi from the factory 15psi.

So, it's dual purpose also.

check out www.smokindiesel.com You even get the modified harness with relay from Doug. That's where I got all my goodies.

hope this helped some.

I'm with DFrank on this one. Fuel air separator ... never ceases to amaze me what companies come up with. Next thing you know there will be a huge fan for the front of the truck on the theory it will create a vacuum for the truck to rush forward and fill up. Should boost mileage to, say, 50 or 60 mpgs at least.

And think how cool the truck would look! Why, you couldn't tell the difference between the truck and an airplane! Except a truck doesn't have wings.

Even there we could add wings to lighten the weight and reduce friction between the wheels and highway. Might be a little hard on traffic going the opposite direction tho ...

yeah, only this one works. Don't bad mouth it if you don't know anything about it. Buy one, try it, AND then IF it doesn't work (but it will) then you can talk smack.

My best was just over 25 mpg, about 360 miles, fresh oil change, fresh fuel filter, smoking hot summer day driving easy 55-60.

My favorite is pulling up to the pump with my 13ft travel trailer and two sea kayaks on the roof. I still pull 20-21 with lousy Alaska heating oil, er, I mean diesel.

You guys have computers? hah! The fuel guage has never worked on my truck in 100k miles..... but I have an odometer, calculator, and log book.

WEL, probably not particularly reliable here, but I only reset my overhead 'puter readout once, right after buying the truck - I now have nearly 23,000 miles on the truck, an EASY 2/3 of that towing our 24 ft. fifth wheel, usually including LOTS of mountainous (Sierra) terrain - and I'm sitting at 19. 5 MPG average as of today.

What I *don't* know, is if that "average" is really over the entire miles since last reset, or only over the last few tankfuls - anyone have a clue?

48. 5 mpg... . on the overhead.

okay, okay, that was downhill going 60mph with the cruise control. Once it flattened out, I hit the reset and got 19. 2 for the next 20 or so miles...

Pen and paper mileage since day one averages 16. 29 so far. Lots of hills and fast driving... . but I'm still getting broken in at 29k. Each tank gets a little better.

TP :D

Once hit 99mpg on the overhead in the '99 Durango coasting down the I-5 Grapevine. Guess it only has two digits.

Obvious to most, the instantaneous readout WILL go as high as 99 MPG when coasting - but unless you spend substantial time coasting, not very significant...

BUT, that IS where being able to monitor instant readout DOES become sorta helpful if higher MPG is important to you - you get real sensitive to the situations and varying travel conditions that WILL help MPG, and try to maximize them, and they DO add up! ;)

My, my, aren't we touchy? Change your attitude, my boy, or at least get a sense of humor if you expect to hang around this board long.

ok so far i here lots of talk and a little smack but no one has tried a flat 5 mile test. i tried again last night from roughly topagana canyon to Malibu Pier approximately 6 miles i got 29. 8 mpg on the computer. but i did have to slow down 2 time and the auto transmission down shifted out of overdrive twice. CAN ANY ONE BEAT THAT! for goodness sakes there has to be some one out there that can reset his computer. come on, all i here about are these long runs lets see who has a really efficient truck! i still think the S. O. has a MPG advantage over the H. O. prove me wrong!

your wrong!look at any HO milage vs SO milage and you will see. Thats why all the SO trucks complain about the milage!I might as well have gotten a gasser with this kind of milage. My 02 with the drag comp,BDIII's and a few other things always got at least 15 mpg around town and at least 18-19 on hwy and I ain't got no light foot! The best this thing has gotten is 15. 2 at 65mph comming back from the river.

Why 5?

Just curious, but why the infatuation with a "5 mile" test? For trucks that get in the neighborhood of 20MPG that's a quarter-gallon of fuel. Depending on how heavy my truck is at the time, the weather and a few other variables that could read anywhere between 16MPG and 28MPG on my truck's overhead computer. Is it permissable to get my truck up to 100MPH and coast most of the 5 miles? If so, then I bet I could hit 40MPG. I've also noticed that my MPG occasionally increases as I drive up a slight grade. How is any of that a true representation of fuel economy? A 5 mile test seems like the equivilant of a whizzing contest for trucks, as short of a run that it is. Why not a 100 mile test over reasonably flat ground and maintaining a minimum and maximum speed?

Just remember you have a dually and I would imagine you have 4:10 gears?

Nope 3:54 My 02 was a dually also and a lot more HP. (Need the training wheels I'm to fat and they keep the fat rollls in line)

all you hi mileage guys ARE blowin smoke or full of bs. any one can make mileage read hi numbers. i have 4 dodge diesels. 93,98,01 and 04. 5. the best one

was the 93 at 18. 5 ALL ALL AROUND ON A FULL TANK

also that was no load flat ground . i think if i can get 15 i am doin ok. rite now the 04 is avg. 13 with 1500 mi. on it, should get better.

Alright, I just finished this tank of fuel. I have not cowboy-ed it at all and did tow with it 3-4 time and I got exactly 14. 2 mpg. Towing was 25% of the tank. I am wanting to get 20-21 mpg like I am seeing posted here, just towing, and 30-32 on the open road at 70-75 MPH. Is it feasible?? NOT! Reality and facts can hurt ones feelings, and I am seeing it here in these threads. I guess some of us live uphill and drive downhill all the time?
