I voted for beer needed.....:) My 5er needs a big truck so it is a non issue for me, plus me and the mrs. now have a Jetta TDI for fun and mileage......that little bugger is a blast to drive. The Nissan should be an interesting truck, plus all the articles I read say it will have a baby Aisin transmission, so it can't be all bad. Predicting quality and comparing it to Nissans made years ago, especially by old school mechanics, makes me:-laf:-laf

I really need a beer for this one.
I own a '14 Nisan Frontier and she's been a good truck for running around town and for the wife use.

But to give up my 3/4 ton for a 1/2 ton ?????

I know several men who run general repair garages. They all agree. Nissan vehicles are bad when it comes to repair. Needlessly complicated to perform service and general repair. Only the Germans are worse. Hopefully the Cummins won't suffer from packaging compromises.

That's interesting. It's been 20 years but I always enjoyed working on German vehicles. I thought the engineering and serviceability was fantastic (particularly on Mercedes).

I have never worked on a Mercedes, only VW's. One item that was needlessly more complicated was the rear drum brakes. For an inspection of the rear brakes you had to pull the wheel bearings inside the drum. They were setup similar to trailer brakes.
One thing I did like is that the actual part number was stamped right on the individual part which made finding new parts easier.

Try checking the fluid level in the transaxle on a manual Jetta or Passat. No dipstick or level plug. Buy a calibrated tool from VW remove a hard to get to trans bolt and insert the tool. Brakes service requires a computer commanded reset. Mercedes is worse. Aftermarket scan tools are unavailable. Must purchase the tool from Merc. No updates. Buy another tool next year. Cant even turn off the oil change light without it. Need I say more?

I am really hoping for the 2.8 4 cylinder Cummins that is supposedly coming in the little Nissan truck. With a 5 or 6 speed, this would be a sweet lil runabout.

If i was going to buy a 1/2 ton truck i would definitely wait to see the new Nissan just because it has the Cummins.
If i liked the looks of the Nissan as much as the Ram i would buy the Nissan over the Ram just for the Cummins.
it comes down to Cummins over VM Motori "Ecodiesel".

I had a conversation with my salesman about the new Nissan and he tried to convince me the ECO diesel was a better option. When I responded that a 1/2 ton with a Cummins and a Aisin auto was more likely to beat out the Fiat Diesel if Nissan does it right, he had no response

I had a friend who was an engineer and loved Cummins and Dodge. He was a good mechanic and eventually was contracted by Dodge as a consultant. This was back in the 06-09 period when Chrysler was still hooked up with Daimler-Mercedes. He told me that Dodge signed a contract with Cummins to develop a small block diesel for the Ram 1500 and Jeep. I asked him why they didn't just use the Mercedes small truck European engine. He said he'd advised against it because of the Texas-Midwest bias toward Cummins and against European engines and stuff. Before Cummins could deliver the engine, Chrysler and Daimler divorced and the contract was cancelled. I'll bet the Nissan Cummins engine is theculmination of thework originally done for Dodge. I like Cummins; I owned two Ram Cummins (2003 2500; 2007 3500) before I bought my ED early this year, but I don't like the Nissan big truck. It uses frameless unibody construction. Any frame-bending accident, and the truck is trash. Without a frame, it's almost impossible to get the body straight.

You couldn't be more wrong Skychief. This is a new Titan rolling chassis picture.

Sorry for the bum info. The guy who told me is a mechanic who swore he new the facts. I sure won't rely on him for future advice. Maybe he got the 1/2-ton Nissan mixed up with the Frontier. Again, mea culpa and lesson learned.

Chief, Frontiers are body-on-frame also. Sounds like your mechanic doesn't know ANY of the facts regarding Nissans.

I certainly don't plan on running out to buy one of these new Titans, however, I do think they are headed in the right direction. Anything has to be better than the current Titan.

If a 2.8 Cummins powered Frontier pops up, I'll be in line for one of those!
