Who's Been in the Military?.

United States Air Force, 12-AUG-1966 thru 20-Oct-1970. Inventory Management specialist, GS-9 level, Non-commissioned Officer in Charge, Demand Processing Unit, Base Supply, Edwards Air Flight test center, Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Basic training at Amarillo S. A. C base, Amarillo, Texas. Inventory Management school was also At the Amarillo AFB.

I was Gung-Ho and into the Military experience and believed in my countries mission. I believed then and still do, that we should have "leveled" Viet Nam and should have let my hero, Gen. Macarthur level Russia at the end of WW2 with the atomic bomb, like he wanted to do. We could have been the dominate world superpower 50 years ago and avoided the cold war and all the G. I. body bags sent home from Asia. Don't even ask what I would have done to the Camel jokeys, Sandn----s and ayatolahs when they had our people held hostage and in fact still hold us hostage over world oil price manipulation. my Father was with the 101st Screaming Eagles and parachuted into France, was wounded and awarded the Purple heart medal, amongst others. Don't tread on us. God bless America and pass the ammunition please! #ad

We were still using Garands when I went thru basic. That was a real rifle and fun to shoot. When I was at the Lexington Signal Depot the GIs had to qualify once a year. The old NCOs I worked with decided that was a good excuse to go shoot up the range with everything we had that would shoot. We had one BAR and a bunch of other stuff. Tommy guns, 03s, Garands, 45s, and carbines. I think there were a couple of M14s but the old timers thought they were a POS so we didn't shoot them. All of us got to shoot everthing. When the dust settled the senior WO filled out the forms that we were qualified for another year. I have no idea why a bunch of technical troops had a BAR but we did. It was a kick to shoot.

U S Army, 1957-60. Basic in Ft. Hood, Tx. (Killeen was so dry, had to drive clear to Temple to get a beer)Took part in operation Gyroscope, 4th Armored Div. replaced 3rd Armored Div. in Germany. Boy what a cluster hump that was, we left Brooklyn Navy yrd. headed for(we thought) Meins, and ended up in Nuernberg. Sure enjoyed the beer, cognyac and fighting the fraulines(sp. ) tho.

U. S. Navy "kiddie cruiser" (joined at age 17, only had to serve three years). From the end of the Korean war till Dec. '56. Interior Communications, E5 when I was honorably discharged. Barracks in San Diego were still in WWII camoflage paint, had to qualify with the M1 Garand in 16 week boot camp.
Spent 8 months in the Hydrogen bomb tests at Bikini/Eniwetok, the first drop of a hydrogen weapon. Operation Redwing. Watched every shot that we blew. Would not trade that experience for anything.
My ships while serving were the Okanogan, APA220, and the Catamount, LSD17.
Remember "The Pike" amusement park in Long Beach?

20+ years U. S. Navy. Retired in 1986 as Master Chief. Aircraft and aircraft support equipment maintenance. 21 months in-country Vietnam. Mostly west coast, lots of westpac and got caught once for a Wash DC assignment. Lots of high points, served with lots of great people. Very sorry to observe slick willies sorry impact on Americas great fighting forces.

1982-1988 USMC Active Reserve; MOS 0241 (Intelligence Specialist), 1988-1990 Inactive Reserve, missed Desert Storm by one month (my unit was activated -- both 'active' and 'inactive' components).

Semper Fi Steve. Spent a few weeks at Beaufort briefing pilots before overseas tours in '86.

Howdy, Porky---"all-out/BTTW" is the proper way to conduct warfare, and makes things go much quicker (like Desert Storm), but if not for VietNam, my father-in-law wouldn't have been in the Philippines to meet his wife, and give birth to my wife--some good things do come out of bad circumstances... just gettin' philosophical---rich

I(retired Electromagnetics Engineer) was never in the military but I did work with and was supported by the military. For instance 40 years ago I wintered over for two years in Antarctica living on Navy Bases. Airdales, SeaBees, black shoe, Coast Guard and a few Marines supported our "scientific" explorations.

1990(140,000 miles), 3. 54 gears, W250 5spd(replaced on guarantee), new head gasket at 98,000 miles, Reunel winch bumper, extra front and rear leaves, K&M air filter, Stanadyne fuel filter and Performance Formula Fuel Conditioner, Borgeson steering assembly and modified steering box to stiffen the steering, balanced drive shafts fore and aft, passenger-side rubber mat loose to mop up the water that leaks into the cab, CB and 2 meters(KB7VEJ), above the cab aluminum canopy with kayak/canoe rack. It’s a keeper.

Four years U. S. Navy; 1953-1957

Enlisted under a program where you could take the test to qualify for a program and the enlistment was conditional on qualifing. I qualified for flight school. BUT flight physical was not untill after boot camp. At flight physical they said sorry kid you need glasses. What else would you like to do---any school the Navy has. I had all the time I needed to decide---while the "clerk" stood there waiting for my decision. Chose RAdar. That ment four years at sea. Mostly far east. Spent time in both Korea and French Indo China , a fair number of up river trips. (Became North and South Viet Nam. Got involved in hauling people from what would become North V. N. to the South. Quite a bit of time in Saigon before it got to hot for Navy ships.
Altogether a great experience, but have always regreted not getting to fly in the Navy; so learned to fly after I got out.
