Who's using a single fuel pump, not the OEM?

Hey guys,



Just curious to who's runnin' a single pump near the tank and bypassing the OEM pump. What kinda luck are you having? What are you using,and what kind of pressures are you seeing?I have a pusher pump, but my lift pump went south,so I'm considering alternatives. I don't need 20+#'s,but something satisfactory,Thanks for your input.

I have been running a single Carter back by the tank for about five months. Showing 15 # at idle, and 10 WOT. I am gravity feeding from a tank in the bed into a Raycor, and then to the pump. Working great so far.

Rob, I hesitate to even reply, but you asked. I just install a Summit 3134 pump in my truck last weekend. Worked great, but leaked from the git go. I installed the replacement last night and it leaked for about 30 miles or so (after the initial 10 mile road test. Weird) and is now not leaking. Can't explain this. Has about 120 miles on it now. Gaskets swelling till they seal? On the otherhand, it is about 17-18psi at idle, 16. 5psi at 65-70 mph cruise and 15 at WOT. It's way too soon to for me recommend this pump and some other members have had very mixed results from good for a year to one week. Take it for what it's worth.

WEIRCUMMIN is running a single pump under the bed. . I think it's a holly red pump, not sure... hopefully he'll reply...

Rob, if you haven't already, read this post https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38994 . Many of us have been trying different single pumps back at the tank (not as a pusher, the Carter pump is removed) with varying sucess. I'm not sure if the PE pump I mention is the answer, I don't even have mine yet, but I like the idea of a 2 year unconditional warranty and the fact that it is a vaned design. In all fairness to the guys running pusher pumps with the Carter pump still installed at the block, they seem to be lasting ( see Steve St. l's post/poll). There is no definitive answer at this point, do your research and try whatever you are comfortable with. The biggest problem is the lag time from when installed to failure. I'm to the point that I will be happy as a pig in **** if the pump lasts one year .

dmurdock is right, I have a Holley 815 back @ the tank. It's been on the truck a little over a year & about 18K, It was on 'sportbikes' truck before mine.

You guys gravity feeding a pump at the tank. Do you have to drain the tank first to put the pump in? Do yuou install a shut off valve in case you have to do it again? Are you using rubber hose from new pump up pass OEM pump?

Carter 4601HP by the tank...

... I moved it from the engine where it had been doing the job for about 1 year prior to the reward move 3 months ago. I have mine pressure regulated out of the pre filter port to 10 psi. That is where the pressure stays. I am only slightly bombed (as per sig). I can get 33-34lbs of boost.

a little off the subject..... has anyone tried a Borg-Warner pump? just got their catalog. EP4600P is a 7 PSI, 100 GPH pump that could be used as a pusher to the OEM. LIFETIME GUARANTEE!!

EP4601P is 15 PSI, 100 GPH. could be used as a single pump. LIFETIME GUARANTEE. both vaned, i think. don't know cost

The 4600 and 4601 in the BW part #s should be a dead give away. I saw a picture of these pumps at the local truck parts place and they look remarkably like a Carter. 4600 was $100. Didn't get the price on the 4601. I didn't know they were lifetime warranty, so I didn't pursue it any further since I knew I could get the Carter 4600 for $70.

I am using one pump with a regulator and am seeing 16PSI at idle and at full throttle. Way to soon to recommend this pump though.

Although I think he has switched since then, Chris Sutton was using an Aeromotive pump that was gravity fed.

I'm gettin' my new lift pump tomorrow,(hopefully) then I'll see how long that in conjunction with the pusher pump lasts. Maybee by the time it fails some of those single pumps will have been thouroughly tested.

I've had my BG220HR on my truck since March of last year. I regulate it to 13psi @ idle, and I have 13psi cruising, and 13psi @ WOT. It probably has 20-24K on it.

tmacc, i think the mallory some of the members are using has the same number, ie 4601. makes you wonder if they're all made by the same co. i got the BWD fuel pump catalog. it includes cross referencing. you're right, it crosses to the carter 4601. couldn't find the mallory, however. IF the Borg-Warner is indeed guaranteed for life, that might be an answer. i can't find a source for one, so far in my "small town" of about 40K people.

I just ordered a Carter 4601 today. The second Summit 3134 started leaking, so back it goes. I also ordered some Weber adapters, so I can made my stock pump an emergency back-up if need be. Scary thought, huh? I'll keep an eye out to see how CannonBall's and Bigsaint's pumps perform.



Can't really tell where the 3134 is leaking. I gooed the snot out of the fitting, but it looks like that where it's leaking from, but the whole bottom of the pump is wet, so it's hard to tell. At $80, maybe I'll just throw 4601's at it for a while.
