Ford Ranger Question

There should be some sort of card lock system like CFN in your area. That's the best deal. No clerks. Open 24 hours. Monthly bill from a local oil dealer. Usually cheaper than other places.

"Usually" cheaper? Sorry, my experiences have been the opposite of Joe's. I had a CFN card, and I used to fuel up at a station in L. A. because it was close to where I worked. This station was a regular retail station with a CFN kiosk at the end of a remote island for truck use. The pumps had the prices on them, but there was a sign saying that CFN customers may not be paying that price. Well, I found out that I was consistently paying at least 4 cents more per gallon than I would have been paying had I just given the attendant cash! It wasn't just this particular location, it seemed like the prices were always higher than at truck stops or regular gas stations. The thing is, with CFN's and Pacific Pride's, you have no idea what you're paying until you get your credit card bill a month later. I no longer have a CFN card, and I don't ever want one!

My favorite is Flying J. Get yourself an "RV Real Value Club Card" (or whatever it's called), and you get one cent off per gallon, and five cents off per gallon of propane, too.

Here in the Seattle area, the Flying J seems to always have the best price on diesel. Add on an auxiliary fuel tank, and you won't have to worry about where to fuel up. Just carry a Flying J pamphlet in your glove box!

I too am a CFN user. I find that I don't usually save, and sometimes pay a bit more, but it is convenient. One thing my local jobber does is give a 3% discount for prompt pay, and that does tend to offset any differences with the local retail pumps.

However, I have been screwed once or twice, and most often it appears to be the stations that also offer retail fuel at the same place. I tend to now stick to the stand alone CFN sites.

My jobber sets the price each Monday based on the rack rate they are paying. Not sure if they use a spot rate, or the average price they paid the previous week. This makes them a little slow to respond to price wars that the retail outlets may be having.

Another benefit I get, at least locally, is that they appear to have a high quality fuel and they bulk treat it with additive, this year they started using Power Service. They have a sign right on the pumps advertising PS Premium Diesel.

Andy, I agree FJ is almost always the best deal, BUT there is only two in Oregon; Troutdale and LaGrande, both a long ways from Bend.

Mebbe you big-city fellers look suspicious! Out here in God's Country, the cashiers wave at you when you pull up to the pump and have your coffee ready when you go inside to pay AFTER you pumped! Gotta love a small town! :D

Heck Bill, Ya got your picture plastered all over, everyone there knows ya. :D :D

Andy,

Around here the Flying J is exactly the same price as Texaco, Unical, Shell, Exxon, or ... The CFN is almost always five or six cents cheaper. CFN is also lower on I5 north of Sacramento. In Sacramento CFN is a couple of cents higher. In Sacramento I use a pay at the pump Exxon. Shelby may be right about the CFN only stations. The only retail plus CFN stations I've stopped at are in Sacramento and they ARE higher. The others in Northern California are all CFN only. As far as I can tell the CFN has super clean fuel at these places. I cut open the last fuel filter I changed and it was still really clean inside. The outside of the filter media was dark but it was not clogged. The stuff just wiped off with my thumb. That filter had been on there so long that I got kind of concerned (Illflem warned me so I got worried) that the filter media might collapse. It was still in good shape. My prefilter is always sparkling clean.
