Gentlemen,
It's been a while since I looked at this post and I am still the lone dissenter. You all love your guns and that's OK. They give you a sense of security and that's OK. However, not one of you has been in a real gunfight, save perhaps the person who claims to be a Marine. My father was a Marine and I know Marines are taught not to boast because they don't need to boast, so I have my doubts. You all some how think that you're going to get the drop on your assailant. When I lived in CA. some years ago my training partner was an LA County Sheriff who had really been in 3 gun fights (hit in the ear once) in his 16 years, much of which was on the gang unit. He told me that he had crapped in his pants every time. Frequently real police officers have their guns taken away from them, and these are professionals that are skilled in use of force tactics. In fact, many police who are shot are shot with their own gun, and you all think you're all going to do better! You been watching to many Dirty Harry movies.
Gentlemen I'm not asking you to think like me. I wise man once said that experience is a harsh teacher "... first you get the test and then you get the lesson. " Don't get tested because there is a real good chance you'll loose; but, just may be you won't. If you think about it, you loose either way.
Respectfully
Kind of a "Catch 22" situation you suggest here, isn't it? Believe it or not, quality training is available for us stupid, inept, incompetent, bloodthirsty, trigger happy civilians. And believe it or not, even incompetent civilians can grasp the concept of proper/safe gunhandling skills and can understand when one is justified to use deadly force.

48 states now have some form of legal CCW. Common sense tells me that if private citizens were as incompetent as you suggest they are, CCW laws would on the wane rather than expanding as they currently are.

I've seen many cops shoot. Unfortunately, many aren't very good with their weapons. Some are quite good. The point I'm making is that badge is no guarantee of competency.
Because we can't expect perfection out of civilian CCW permit holders, you wag you finger at us and tell us to leave the guns at home. Obviously, we don't have perfection out of LEO's.
Are you for disarming LEO's as a result?
And lastly, in only about 14% of all defensive gun uses are shots fired. The overwhelming majority of the time the bad guys turn tail and run. That little tidbit isn't taken into account in your earlier "you're 5x more likely" line.
Sorry, but your condescension isn't winning me over. I'll take my chances with my 1911 on my hip.
Even if I'm not on the government payroll.
