My wife has a 2002 3500 dually with a 6 speed, here lately we have been having a problem when driving about 50 or 55 in 6th gear. You try to speed up and nothing happen's but if you downshift , get the RPM's up then shift back into 6th it will take off. I am thinking it may be the fuel pump. any ideas?

Weeellll,

what is your fuel pressure?

When is the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Is this ongoing or is it related to a recent purchase of fuel?

Low power can be many things. APPS, lift pump, VP fuel delivery problem from the tank, bad air filter, problem with the turbo and or wastegate. The list goes on.

What have you done to the truck for mods if any? How long has this been going on? Need some more info.

Or a faulty MAP sensor. If the ECM doesn't "see" boost, it won't increase fuel.

Try cycling the key off-on three times (engine not running), and any recent codes will be displayed on the odometer.

I had the same thing happening to mine for a couple of months. I replaced the MAP sensor and it had no effect. Check your codes to see if you have a P0216. My problem went away after replacing the injector pump.

Hope thats not your problem, but it sure sounds familiar.

It has a new fuel filter and air filter, it is not the clutch slipping the clutch is fine. There have been no mods to the truck at all. I check the codes by turning the key on and off. I am thinking it may be problem with the lift pump or the injector pump. Guess I need to take it in and get it checked out.

Thanks,

Dan

On flat level ground I usually shift into 6th at about 45mph. 55 in 6th is about 16-1800, don't remember exactly.

I took the truck in to the dealership and the lift pump was bad, and since I do not have a fuel pressure gauage on the truck I had no idea the fuel pressure was low. The low fuel pressure damaged the injector pump also, they told me both pumps would cost about $2K to replace. The good news is the truck has 80K miles and the warranty on the drive train covered the damage. My next step is to get fuel pressure gauages put on both of our Dodge Diesel trucks. I just wonder why they dont come from the factory with a fuel pressure gauage, sinc ethe low pressure can cause so much damage.
