Wiring in back up lights

Searched through the pld post and didn't really find much on this. On my old first gen, I have a set of KC back up lights. I get power to a relay from tapping in to the backup light wire at the light. I then have a wire running from an auxillary panel back to power the 55w lights.



Can this be done on the 3rd gens, specifically the 06? I know there are all kinds of monitors which search for burned out filaments and such. Do these cause any kind of problem? Any gotcha's I should be aware of?



I hate backing this thing up at night with the dark abck window.

Have you checked into the White Night backup light kit.



I'm thinking about the same thing. Genosgarage.com has them.

I'm doing exactly as you did before on my 04, 04. 5 and 05 3500 dually's We run a 12v 10 gauge fused (25 amp) wire from the battery... . this we put into our trailer connectors to charge the trailer batteries... . and tap off of this lead with a relay to turn on the back up lights..... This has served us well over the years.....



The lights out circuit doesn't see the low current draw of the relay... usually when we see the lights out bulb on the dash. . its a working light but a poor connection... .



We've had the small lights on the fender flair of the dually melt and go away on 2 of our trucks and can't seem to stop this even though we have put dieletric grease on the connections.....

I don't think the backup lamps are monitored by the lamp out circuitry, so there shouldn't be a problem hooking a relay to them (as jelag points out).

PS my '03 does register "LAMPOUT" when a backup is out (been there... ... . )

Really! I didn't know it would do that. But apparently hooking in a relay doesn't screw up the lamp out indication...

on my 04, i have tried it with no load at all on the backup light circuit and i got no "lamp out" light on the dash. the only load i currently have is a relay coil on the left side backup light wire [right side is sealed off]



maybe dodge cheaped out between 03 and 04 [power lumbar went away too. . ]

I haven't checked on my 06 but my 99 had a back up light wire to the trailer plug so I tapped in to that to run my lights i put back there, I didn't try to rewire so i could turn them on when not in reverse but it would be handy at times whne un friendly people are behind you.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that fancy wiring harnes back there. I've never had a 7 pin before, only 4 so I forgot I had back up lights already wired back there.



I will definitely have to wire in a switch to turn them on at will, however. I have backed off more than one tailgater before. :-laf
