Ford 7.3 fuel pressure

In 1970 I got to go aboard a VW car transport ship. We were taken down to the engine room and shown around. The engine was massive! It had bulkhead doors on the side of it so someone could go inside(engine off of course). They had a spare piston also and it was about 7 feet tall and atleast 4 feet across the top. They start the thing with compressed air and to reverse, they stop it and re-start it in the other direction. The engineer told us that full RPM was 110 revs. After the tour, they gave us some good German beer!!

Brewski, How do they start the little guys? What is the handle on the head? Does it run Diesel fuel or alchohol? I have a scale airplane single cyl 4 stroke,complete with valves but a glow plug. The thing that I can't understand about the engine of mine is how the lower end is lubed as the air/fuel mixture doesn't go thru the bottom end and there isn't any crankcase to speak of. Chris
 
Ive never had the oppurtunity to start one, but they run on a mixture of ether, alchol [sp?], and lub oil. The handle on the top adjusts the compression, kinda like the timing. And then there is the standard model airplane mixture control. I guess they're really torky compared ot glow engines and they can swing a larger prop.



I've seen the fourstrokes your talking about, although I havent owned one - my last RC motor was a YS Futaba . 45 and it was a screamer. I assume the four strokes have all ball bearings, and their lubed by the blowby from the piston. 4 stroke fuel is formulated a bit differently I think.

Thats a great picture, thanks for sharing. We run Fairbanks-Morse twelve cyl with turbos and blower, 3627bhp @ 900rpm. I will show this one at work, it's massive. I wonder how many CTD's you could park inside it?

There are probably some large Marine or Stationary Engineers lurking out there who could tell you a bit about these engines.



I'm on a ship running two 4400 HP engines at this moment turning 425 rpm and burning light fuel. Charge air at 17 psi and about 200F.

Bore =450mm

Stoke 550mm



Far more interesting are the crosshead type engines in Doc's picture. Bore just under 1000mm

Stroke sometimes 2000mm



There are some old postings about this stuff if you can find them in a search. Perhaps under "large engines".
