Ok, as far as my cold starting problem went, it hasn't been getting cold enough to be a problem, at least for now. I know Pastor Bob was interested.

Now I worry about my injection pump. It still smokes pretty bad at loaded idle ( auto transmission) and I was wondering if it could be a worn camring? This is the origional pump that came on the engine, it has 213,000 miles on it. Every time I get on the highway at WOT, I'm worried about it just finally giving up and joining it's failed brothers in diesel pump heaven. Should I be worried? I was thinking of upgrades I want to do to my engine. New turbo and smaller housing, better injectors. But if I did this, I'd want to turn up my pump. With it's age and it being a smoker, should I worry about it giving out on me? Just being paranoid I guess!

Jaynes,

Have you checked the idle speed? If it is idling too slow, that will cause some smoke.

How old is the fuel filter?

Are they the stock injectors?

Has someone turned up the power screw and/or the smoke screw?

You don't need to answer these questions, you may just want to check these things.

jaynes,

I wouldnt worry about turbo upgrades affecting your pump. Larger injectors can actually REDUCE pressure on the pump, if they flow enough. What color is your smoke? I'm having some cold (unplugged @19deg) blue/ white smoke, but it clears up for the most aprt when it gets warm enough to kick the KSB out. It could be just part of the pump and engine not getting any younger. Mine is getting ok MPGs, esp for the way my right foot cant stay off the floor in town:cool: . If I had the money, I'd get one of those there updated pumps and stick it on, then a ported head, intercooler.....

ANd the injectors could well be causing your smoke issues as well. If one of the tips is coked up a bit, or stuck halfway shut, it will cause some smoke. Hard to tell what is causing what sometimes.

from my understanding there is no load from the transmission in park, dodge trannys do not pump in park. That is why you have to check fluid level in neutral, and it was recommended to allow the transmission to pump in gear for a short bit before taking off.

VE pumps are fickle. It may last a long time or quit tomorrow. Smoke at an idle could be a pump problem, or dirty injectors, or too much idle fuel. Check the easy stuff first before getting too worried. Good luck.
