Toyota in NASCAR?

I, too, would like to hear Brian's observations, especially on the Viper. Just curious after so many conflicting stories.

I'm getting older, fellas, so I guess my dream car would be a BMW 750. Large car for crash protection, plenty of power (326hp), great handler, room for the grandkids, prestigious but not pretentious, all around performer #ad

Ok, I'll throw my $. 02 worth in. All the cars listed by others so far are certainly all fantastic rides. My personal dream car, which I absolutely plan to own at some point, is a [genuine] Shelby 427 Cobra. Shelby American started making them again in 1996, I think, and you can get the 427 in either fiberglass body (~$50K) or hand pounded aluminum (~$75K). However, this price is with NO engine or transmission. They do however currently offer an all aluminum block 427, but no price last time I checked their website.

I have been fortunate enough to see original (1960's era) Cobras in "show" races at Laguna Seca in Monterey, and ocassionally on the street, and while they don't offer quite the same phenominal cornering and handling chatacteristics of a Porsche (sp??), Ferrari, etc. , I get my thrills from pure, flat out un-godly acceleration and the sound/thunder produced by a disgustingly massive engine.

When I watched the races at Laguna Seca, and the Cobras passed by my seat, I felt the earth shake and felt my ear drums fill with one of my favorite sounds (Harley's and Cummins rounding out my favorite sounds #ad

), and tears of joy ran down my face. Just gotta have one of those someday #ad
But until then, Godzilla and the Mustang will do just fine...

Those guys in the One Lap GLHS and the 68 Valiant are annual party poopers for someone... low tech, low budget race winners that come home near the top every time.

One small victory for the little guy with no hope of an exotic.

I prefer a 340 Dart. Have a Dart 360 in there too. Might get rid of the 63 sedan for a 65 convertible, if I feel like it and find a 'vert.

Can't stand the high priced stuff... . anyone can go anywhere with unlimited budget. And it takes more talent to get the low cost unrefined stuff down the road.

I have a few cars that I have liked for ever. My first muscle car same as Fireman's 1970 GTX 440 6Pack 4 speed & Dana. My current race car 1971 Mach 1 351C 4V C6(best time 10. 48@142 MPH at 4800 feet).

My dream cars would be a Cobra replica that I would build myself. Ausy 351 C Alum block 6 speed & Jag rear end.

My newest dream car would be an old t bucket high boy with a 12 valve cummins a good HD auto and some high gears and monster tire to handle all the torque.

Now if Money grew on trees I have them all... .

Brian, you're right about the Pantera, but being a mechanic, part of the fun to me is taking a less than perfect car and upgrading whatever it needs. For the classic Italian styling on that car, it may just barely be worth the time and expense, the real worth is in the fun of fixing it up...
As for a Porsche, that would be my first choice. The power and handling, right from the showroom floor, is incredible.
Except for a Porsche, all the vehicles I listed in my previous post are way beyond my means financially. He did say "dream" cars, didn't he? #ad

Have you driven any of the new generation of Porsches? The 939? What are they like?

Love those Boss Mustangs!! I compete against a few of them in vintage racing, but have never driven one... street or race. I guess the early Z28 would be similar. Briar, there are 2 Pantaras that run occationally in some racing events, and the owners ARE mechanics and engineers!! I feel sorta bad for them, and the English-car drivers as they work feverishly under jackstands, and I sit in a lawnchair in the shade, drinking water with nothing to do except add gas and check tire pressures! I have gobs of time behind the wheel of new Porsche 993, 996, and twin turbo cars. The new-new twin turbo is... well, its a nice car... but its not *fun*. Speed isnt what blows my skirt up, and this new car feels and sounds the same at 45 and 125mph... soft, quiet, relaxed... all you can hear at 125 is the a/c blower... amazing!... but not FUN. The Ruf prepared cars are scarry--3200lbs and 550-600hp with brakes that will throw you out on the hood. Drove a single turbo car with a clutchless 6 speed gearbox, and it pulls as hard at 170mph as it does at 70!!! Just incredible!!! Now, if I was Wayne Huizinga...

Mechanics AND engineers, and they can't keep Panteras running? Bummer. Sort of like Anna Nicole Smith, mighty nice to look at, but you wouldn't want to take her home or let her anywhere near your wallet, #ad
. So the new Porsches have evolved into quiet luxury rides... That has it's place, but I prefer to remember my 911 as it was, taught, tight, fast, could feel every wrinkle in the road.

I had a factory Dodge ride for the One Lap of America back in 1991, the first year for the Stealth/Mitsu 3000GT. They gave us a twin turbo all wheel drive car... (nice car to go to the office, but hardly a GT). . anyway, there were some fellas entered in an Omni GLHS that went thru the speed traps at Charlotte Speedway at 155mph!!! What a flying shoebox!!. . I saw the hood open later and went to snoop; it was a greasy, nasty mess, all black and never been Gunk'd. . why ask why?

I have tried to read the One Lap'er stories every chance I could... and sometimes ended up laughing so hard tears came to my eyes, especially when the topic was the stealth mode glh and the "green brick". If I ever get a chance to, I'm going to build me one of those A-body cars with all the handling stuff Mopar Performance and others have.

I have a basket case GLH - the first year car, an '84 - sitting beside the house, waiting for me to come up with some money to fix the blown engine and make it a street warrior again. Those cars remind me of hte Power Wagon... crude, simple, unsophisticated... accomplish thier jobs with brute force #ad

Are you SURE you don't need some computer-geek-diesel injection-leadfoot kind of guy to work for you test-driving those cars? #ad

Sorry P. W. , wish I could but all these cool cars arent mine to do with as I wish! And the other bummer is, being that they're not mine I dont get to thrash them at 90% either!
About 50-55% is all the harder I would drive something that belongs to someone else... very gentle, very cautious. But it does give me a good idea of what the car is all about. Years ago, I got to work at *schools* for MB, Lexus and Cadillac. They rented a race track for a few days, brought all their different models and some competitors' cars. Sales people from all over the US were flown in for what the industry calls "ride and drive" program. We set up a series of exercises demonstrating drag races, slolom, ABS braking, and switch-backs. The corporate folks go thru the motions and we give them scare-rides at the end of the program... kinda fun getting some goober car salesman to yawn all over the back seat of a new $50k Caddy!! LOL I even remember an instructor throwing a new Lexus 400 into the guardrail at a good speed... THAT was a good day!!

My dream car and why?

Something that costs at least $250,000.

Why? - Cause it would mean I'd be wealthy to afford a car like that and wouldn't need to work for a living! #ad

My dream car would be a Lola T70 MkII, the late 60's early 70 Can-Am racer. I've never seen one in person, but I like the looks of the car. Of course It would need some minor updates to reflect modern technology. The new engine would be a 390cid Sb chevy, iron block, Aluminum Splay valve or Sb2 heads, twin turbos, EFI stack manifold. Upgrade brakes to carbon disc's, 18" rims for street legal rubber. 6 speed sequential gearbox, and a carbon fiber/kevlar body. No AC or tunes, just tags, insurance, and a clear road #ad

Maybe it's a sign of my getting old, guys, but given my choice of one vehicle to drive and keep, just look at my signature.

MetalTech, I was at Sebring Raceway in November and was offered a drive in a Lola T600!! is a 1981 IMSO GTP Prototype car with full ground effects, mid-engined 366cuin injected Chevy at about 800hp, 1800lbs! I said "thanks, but no thanks". . on the grounds of, should something unfortunate happen while I'm in the car (even though , not my fault) I'm still responsible... sorry, but a $250,000 car aint what I want to work on for the rest of my natural life!

BCFAST, I grew up around drag racing, and built my 71 camaro as a drag car. I went the drag route since finding a road track nearby is very difficult. I've always had an inner desire to drive something that would do more than go fast in a straight line. The closest I've gotten is in '98 our F-Body org. , went to Road Atlanta for a gathering, this was during the Walter Mitty Challenge. Seeing those old Trans Am cars, 70 Stang's, 69 Z-28's, ect, was a blast. I'm not sure if I could turn down a Prototype car ride. If I could find a kit Lola T70, I would probably sell the camaro.

MT, dude, I was there racing at the Mitty!! I jumped on my pit bike and cruised up the hill to check out all the F cars and Impala's... seems to me the event was called 'Impalapaluzza'? Some real handsome cars up there! Was like... '97 or so... .

BC, Who knows, I could have seen your car run that weekend. It was a joint event with the Impala SS folks, even had Pontiac there with some Special cars. I did walk through the pits and check out the cars. I was impressed with the amount of fabrication the cars had in them. I'm just a hp/speed junkie #ad

Love the old Mo's as you can see by my Cuda sig below. I had a 99 C5 Corvette that was breathtaking. Very nice ride.

I like the older cars, but you get so scared driving them, wondering who the next moron is going to be that decides to run his uninsured $200 beater into your 1 of so many built muscle cars. I felt comfortable with the Vette because it was new and there were a bazillion parts out there in case something went wrong. I saw a guy get plowed by a mini van in his rare lime green bench seat, column shift AAR 70 Cuda with 20k miles on it at the Mopar nats a few years back. Almost made you sick to see it.
