Have been teaching racing and high-performance driving schools for 14+ years now... have driven just about everything, and on a race track. If you want the truth (NOT what's in Car & Driver) about what a particular car is like... I will be happy to give you my observations and opinions... from Saleen Mustangs, Vipers, Porsches and Ferraris of all types, BMWs, Vettes, whatever... Brian

Brian, I'd personally like to hear anything you've got to say about any of the cars you've driven. For example, how do the US muscle cars REALLY compare to the Europeans and the Japs?

That new Mopar is interesting, but they have to come up with a different name for it. "Super 8 Hemi" makes me think of a motel.

I always got a thrill out of driving my '70 GTX - 440+6. It could put you back in the seat pretty good, although handling was a different story. #ad
It's my dream car because it was the first car I ever owned, and I was silly enough to sell it. I wish I had it back. Also on my dream list would be any '64-'70 Hemi B-body car and the Superbird/Daytona cars. The Hemi is a significant piece of motor history, and there's nothing quite like the sight of one of those winged cars. There's plenty of others that I could go on and on about...

A '97 Porsche 911 Turbo S, a RUF Turbo R, or CTR. There is no substitute. 944 turbo S is fun too and even the new BMW M3 looks promising if they'd get rid of those potmetal brake calipers.

2001 3500 QC 4X4 black sport, ETH & everything else except 4. 10s Properly valved, improperly pumped.

here I come, into the hammerlane without checking my blind spot (sorry, little Porsche). using a liberal definition for "fast", i'd kinda like an early 70's Galaxie 500 convertible w/390/c-6... or Robert DeNiro's big ugly Cad from the Deer Hunter, or Nick Nolte's big ugly Cad from those 24hours movies... I don't know why.

I like 'em small displacement, normally aspirated, high rpm's, light weight!

Any sixties Lotus
Early 80's Porsche 911S
'77 Ferrari 308 w/all those yummy Webers! HHHOOOWWWWLLLL!!!!

If I could choose a new car, (And hit the Lotto), it'd have to be a Porsche Boxster! Pure sex on wheels!

In the real world, it's a Mazda Miata. Not that fast, but you just gotta drive one to understand... .

I'm building my dream car now. 32 Ford five window coupe. A close replica to the American Grafitti. I say close because I'm updating some of the components to make it safer to drive on the street. 4 wheel power disc brakes instead of manual drums and other things like that. The motor is the fun thing. 383 Chevy with a Man-A-Fre intake and 4 Rochester 2g's in a car that weighs in right around 2000lbs.

1966-67 A/C Cobra. 427 side oiler, blue with a white stripe down the middle. I have always wanted one but couldnt afford it. Last week I saw the same guy driving one in my neighborhood. I say him twice that week. His was the real thing, in mint condition. I ran the plate and found out it was a 1966 model. I wasnt jealous, just happy I got to see a real one on the street, twice in one week. I for one will not be able to afford the real thing, so one of these days I will build a replica, with the 427 in it.

Hey, TomGolden---they make'm here in Las Vegas, out at the speedway complex... pedals are all too far to one side, and body style didn't appeal to me (just my own impression)
they have one parked at the Oldsmobile place in Henderson,NV just up the block from where the million mile Ram is parked(dodge place)

OK guys... here goes: have driven an original 427 cobra. it was an original race car with Sebring history! what a POS!! wont stop, wont turn, and really doesnt go all that great... the suspention technology is so bad, that it just spins the rear tires waaay thru 100mph or so!! LOL If it wont hook up, it wont go. . simple as that! My hat is off to the brave souls who flung those monsters around in heavy race traffic at high speed. Of the older American ground-pounders I have driven, I really enjoyed a 1969 Z-28 original Trans Am car. Had a 302 short stroke motor and 4 speed. . exhaust exits with dual open pipes in front of RR tire... and sure sounds like Dale's car at 8000rpm!!! It was aerodynamically diabolical, (gets light at 120, then 145 and settles back down around 150) and even with late-model Vette brakes on it, wouldnt stop worth a darn... am used to Porsches and BMW brakes, I guess. The Viper is a neat little car. The R/T10 is a pig, but the GTS is a hoot! Gobs of torque off the corners, lots of legs down the back straight and monster braking power... by FAR the finest American GT car... the only real negative is the pedal off-set... you sit sorta sideways in the cockpit because of wheelwell intrusion..... any other cars you'd like to know of? Have driven a variety of RUF Porsches, Ferraris ... Jap rally cars, etc...

Exotic cars have gotten extremely soft since their highs in the mid 80's. During the span from 98-2000, the prices rose somewhat. . however with the weakness of Wall Street, things may get worse before they get better. A Porsche 962 racer once sold easily in the $850k-$1M range... you can choose pretty much any one you wish for around $200 today.

Here are a few "dream" cars I'd like to have...
1)1968 Camaro, suspension completely rebuilt with Bill Mitchell components, and drivetrain by John Lingenfelter, or Clenny Spendenen(of Richard Childress Racing)
2)Any 1972-up DeTomaso Pantera
3)Factory Five Cobra replica with an Ernie Elliot-built engine
www.factoryfive.com
4)Kremer Porsche K3 935 (from the 80's)
5)ANY Porsche(I love 'em all)
6) An original Vector W2 with the original twin-turbocharged Chevrolet V8, one of a handful built by Gerald Wiegert before he lost his shirt(and company)
7)any present Vector W8 ( now owned & built by Lamborghini)but with a Ryan Falconer-built V-12 engine

Papa Joe, one of the organizations I teach for is the BMW Club of America. The 750iL is sure a cool ride, but if I wasnt writin' the check, I'd love to own the 740iL Sport. Waaaaay cool car! Buttery smooth, stupid amounts of power, great feeling brakes, the interior wreaks of leather #ad
and the only sound is the CD player... I describe the car as 'elegant'. Sorry to say Briar, but the Pantara just isnt where its at... no stopping, no turning... but it does overheat pretty well! The current model Corvettes I've driven are pretty darned good... for a change! The brakes are still a joke, and the build quality still isnt wonderful, but they've got the handling down top notch! For the same money, why not buy a Porsche? Its a better, quicker, faster, stickier car. . and it's worth something when youre tired of owning it! Even though I race a 914/6 and am a fan of mid-engined racers, the Boxter doesnt float my boat. I am in LOVE with the Ferrari 355 and 360 cars... especially with their wonderful F1 gearbox. . ooo-la-la! But, the money is insane... For you Ford fans, the full comp. package Saleen Mustang is what the Mustang should have been right from the git-go... nice feeling little car, tremendous grunt, and with the totally replaced suspention, and real go-er! hmmm... what else... do you guys even care about the Jap stuff?

Well, it would be fun to be your assistant for a while #ad

Of the cars I'd like to own: Chrysler 300M, Dodge Spirit RT. I'd like to have a GLHS too.

Speaking of real driving, I did SOLO II for three years, and one year I had an '84 Dodge Diplomat Cop special. Pursuit suspension and the "nothing special" cop 318. All year I consistently closed the gap between me and my nemesis, a friend with a Mustang GT, 17 inch rims, fat rubber, camber plates and an aftermarket handling kit. Near the end of the season, I finally beat him. He simply could not imagine that big clunky passenger car outperforming his pony car.

The next year, I raced a bone-stock 89 horizon. After eating the lunch of a local college kid's Porsche, I simply could not resist. He was standing near the staging area, helmet in hand, looking at the times. Upon noticing I had beaten him he seemed visibly upset... And I just smiled and said "Plymouth, there is no substitute!".

He never came out to race again.

P. W... LMAO!!! that'a boy!! what's the difference between a porcupine and a Porsche? the porcupine's pricks are on the outside!! LOL. . (this from a Porsche guy!) I had a factory Dodge ride for the One Lap of America back in 1991, the first year for the Stealth/Mitsu 3000GT. They gave us a twin turbo all wheel drive car... (nice car to go to the office, but hardly a GT). . anyway, there were some fellas entered in an Omni GLHS that went thru the speed traps at Charlotte Speedway at 155mph!!! What a flying shoebox!!. . I saw the hood open later and went to snoop; it was a greasy, nasty mess, all black and never been Gunk'd. . why ask why?

Brian,
Have you had much experience with the early 90s DSM AWD cars... been kinda interested in them due to the price tag and supposed bang fer the buck.
