Good-bye EcoDiesel, Hello Cummins

Yes, it's the new oil filter.

I have that same setup on my EcoD.

Pros and cons to it though. A big pro is no more fitting your hand in a wheel well and needing gadgets to remove the filter. Another pro it is less messy. Con, higher chance of gunk/debris falling into the system. Another con is that because it is upside down, the heavier particulates don't settle at the bottom of the filter.

I still prefer standard spin-on filters.

Expect MOPAR to only be selling this filter for the first year or two till the off-brands catch up.

Well someone has to say it: They finally ended the debate on "Top or through the fender oil filter change?"

Another advantage the cartridge allows you to inspect the filter for defects prior to install and see how it performed on removal.

With the recent past shortages of things say like filters and specifically a "new" filter number GM's I6 diesel experienced shortages on I would have preferred they used the old spin on filter number.

Is this a common to anything else cartridge filter for the 2025 or a completely new part number?

Right now one can get great deals on the 2024, and I expect maybe even better next year to push them off the lots.

I just picked a '24, 2500 Big Horn at random, they dropped another $1k this week for a total of over $9k off MSRP of $71k.

I have not ordered a pickup since '69 when I ordered my '70 F-100 4x2.

If you order now, will they lock in your sale price and trade in value? Think tariffs on new and when the general public gets up to speed on the new 2500's, I am afraid my '21 trade in value is going to tank.

What say you experienced guys on the subject?

Eh, I'm still tempted to buy a 2024 Bighorn HO AISIN 3500 leftover next year. I don't know. I got less than two years (as of now) on my extended warranty on my current truck, and it's been working. Plus I bought new brakes for it sitting on my workbench for the spring. Has new tires on it (both snow and highway with another set of rims w/TPMS). So, I dunno. Would like to "use up" what I bought.

What I like about the existing 2024 is that there is parts galore. Now they are changing a bunch of stuff and eh, only complicates things.

Or I keep the 2020 EcoD and buy a 2024 and park it till I want to get rid of the EcoD. Just seems like a waste. Plus then I'll have more trucks.

Thing is, I could wait till 2026 and do a dealer inventory search for left over 2024s. Just don't like the idea of a new truck just sitting on a lot outside for like 2 years...

sounds like you don't need a new truck.. I have a 2016 Ram 3500, it has 161k on it now. I plan on driving it until I can't drive anymore or I hit the Powerball.. in that order.

four rules to follow for financial security and you only buy stuff if the answer is yes to all 4 questions.

1.Don't buy anything you don't need. ( Wanting stuff is different than needing stuff )
2. Don't buy stuff you don't have the money to pay cash for. ( then its OK to buy it on credit)
3. Don't buy stuff you will only use once
4. don't buy stuff you if don't have a place to keep it (people pay more to store stuff like RV's or junk furniture than it is worth LOL. )

not hard on the 13-18 and really easy 19-24 from top. Good time to inspect air intake that is known to fail and check turbo play. No special tools from top.

But hey I have been ripped for my top change along with trying my best to get as much old fluids removed. :D

like I said, the Hoopla.. if you want to change the filter from above or thru the fender makes no difference.
it is much the same as the comments about Moose Mirrors or leaving them up versus down..

who really gives a ratones culo?

Although it's a fun discussion having two ways to go about something depending on one's situation can be helpful. Again a thanks from me as the advice from the discussion, however odd of a way to run across the advice, allowed me to catch this rub through before it became a silicon number on my UOA. Even better was it being under warranty at the time.

No more CGI engine block?? Why? Rod bearing failure? Really have not heard many horror stories about these CGI blocks but maybe there are plenty, dunno.

Apparently a lot of windowing of the blocks under extreme load conditions. Not sure which is more prevalent on the standard output or the high output.

The truck I drive almost everyday for work is a SO and it's got over 200k miles and no issues. We've had minimal issues with the RAM diesels, at least in the SO configs. We don't have any of the HO versions.

I'm interested in seeing how all this does with the glow plugs and redesigned pieces.

One thing I do "kind of like" is the oil filter design, only because I like it on my EcoD. But, eh, old 2024 and prior was fine too. Hopefully they don't do what they did on the 3rd Gen EcoD, where the cap and filter are integrated. Seems like such a waste to throw away the cap, because the filter is permanently mounted in it.

I'm also hoping that the Powerline is going to have a side mounted spin on oil filter, instead of some kind of integrated pan filter like there is on the 8HP75. On the Powerline, I'd like a dip stick and a side mounted spin on filter. Man, that would make servicing it a cats meow.

All in all, I hope the service aspect of all these changes make the engine bay more accessible for not just oil and fuel filter work, but also major service tasks. That is a huge gripe I have about the current trucks, especially Ford/GM with their V8 configuration. The engine is way too overlapped with tubes/hoses/parts under the hood to the point of a simple fix takes hours of removing hoses and parts to do the actual job.

We'll see here in a few weeks.
