was on a long trip (2000m) and truck started running rough. the problem is intermittent. or was. now that i am home it seems to be real rough almost all the time. a little white smoke. and this after i noticed more than normal black smoke at idle while on the trip. at one stop the idle was jumping up to 1500! maybe 2 grand. leaky lines? bad lift pump? could the ve done up by piers already need rebuild? truck has less than 150k on it. any help appreciated greatly

This part makes me wonder if you've broken a plunger return spring in the distibutor end of the pump. When my springs broke at about 140,000 miles on a box stock truck, idle would rev up, the fall on its face and sound like it had a huge cams lope to it. Has it ever 'taken off' down the road? Mine would do that and smoke like a banshee out the dual tailpipes, again on a stock truck that never smoked.

Thats my only experiance like what you are saying.

its a manual trans truck and is always pulling a trailer

weighs 20k

always

so it is kinda hard to tell...

when it first started happening it was surging kinda

this thing always smoked some while under load

but i did notice it was even smoking at idle at one stop

was running fine then

dont know

dont want to spend a bunch of money on fittings and hose and a lift pump and gauges and such if the pump needs to be gone thru

i need the truck in a couple of weeks for another 2k mile trip

not cool

actually, the first time it did it the engine was reving higher and dropping lower

then the normal 650 idle

but now it just seems to be dropping lower

and making some loud bangs out the pipe

what should i do?

how hard is it to get to the springs you are talking about to see if they are broke?

who is best at rebuilding these pumps?

turn around?

how much is a used '04 going for?

lol

Don Tanklage who is best at rebuilding these pumps? lol[/QUOTE said:
where do you live? Just make d*nm sure you use the best possible, mine came back and now I have a LOT less power then what I sent it out with.

If the base pump is sound, then you simply pull the pump and take it apart. Replace the springs (set no. 467 010 410) and install a new seal kit (set no. DGK 121) and remount onto engine with a fresh gasket ( D7180 455)

okay.....

i am still thinking it might be the lift pump? if it is going, where would i see it???

(low rpm (like idling) or high rpm????)

cuz it is doing the weird stuff at idle, seems ok at cruise, at least most of the time, sometimes i can feel it try to stumble even at cruise tho, and the weirdest thing is right before the thing started with the problems it was pulling harder than ever, even up to 3k??????

the fuel lines prolly oughta be replaced anyways... they are antique

and the lift pump is getting close to 150k

cummins has them for 113 bucks, is that the way to go for the pump?

was gonna use the blue hose and slip lock fittings but i noticed that bob used some pretty small valves on his fuel sys (1/4 npt in n out) and i dont think you can get slip lock fittings for -6 line that screw into that small of a valve, can you? prolly oughta find some larger valves while i am at it.

lots of questions, i know

sorry

and thanks (at the same time... lol)

ps - greenleaf, i dont know if it is sound. all i know is that henry from piers met bob and nancy at one of the dtr deals and talked bob into letting him do the pump. dont even know what year that was. truck sure runs great when it is running right. good milage and good power. was gonna upgrade everything to bigger and better (turbo intercooler inj etc) but i think i would be better off leaving it alone and buying a high output truck one day and spending the bucks on that one. do you agree that it is probably the springs in the pump? thanks again you guys.

If it intermittently surges, and wants to rev high, I'd suspect the pump springs. I'd have either Northeast Diesel in Jackson MO, or Bryan Banghart (dzlpwr) do it. Whoever you have do it, be specific in what your power deisires are, and ask how much fuel they will turn you up to. (I have 160mm right now- little over double stock output)

As for buying a newer truck, yes, you may spend some money for the injector pump, lift pump, and injectors, but that is what, 2 payments on a new one? If the old one runs fine, keep it til the body falls off it.

Daniel

thnx daniel

thats why i have not bought a newer one yet

was thinking about spending under 20 for a '03 or 4 high output truck

but the only real benifit would be the ride and its ability to climb hills at quicker speeds hopefully with out worrying about cracking the head

this one doesnt really rev high anymore (when idling)... it just did that the first time it freaked out on my way outta town last month. my buddy said it musta got something in the fuel. i drove the heck outta it and it eventually went away. ran fine the whole time i was up north, ran fine all the way home (1,000 miles), then, when i left it idling in front of my house when it got here it quit. lol. bet the '04 wouldnta got me home. i will figure it out. it didnt used to rev past 2500 until this trip, then all of a sudden it started pulling to 3k. i think it has been going for a while and that was its last surge of life. gonna replace the lines and lift pump first, then if the prob persists i will pull the ve pump and open a whole new can of worms

thanks again

ps - how do i change my signature?

those tires are worn out and i will have to replace them before the next trip (if i get it running right) and nothing is for sale unless i decide to upgrade instead of replace the truck.

thnx

figured it out... thanks again

I recently replaced my 2 year old Carter lift pump because it would kill the engine. It would suck air and die under load.

I cut the pump apart to verify the failure and one of the rubber check valves had broken apart. . plus it was no longer large enough to cover the fuel port.

The symptom that convinced me it was the lift pump was that I had difficulty (at best) getting it to prime manually... . as in little resistance felt while I was priming.

Mine never surged or anything. . it would just up and die. Happened 4 times before I figured out exactly what the issue was.

Hope this helps your diagnosis.

Jay

now we are talkin

as soon as it started acting up (was idling, and it started sputtering) i replaced the fuel filter

i wasnt at home so i didnt have my jug of diesel and had to use the little prime lever

i never felt any resistance, pumped it forever

forgot all about that (it was a whole month ago... lol) until i read your post

going to cummins later today

will let you know what happens

thanks again you guys

I paid around 50 bucks for a lift pump at my local bosch rebuilder. the reason I had my pump rebuilt was intermitent problems at idle. they said I had some busted springs in the pump. (the rebuild did fix that. )

yea, well... . i just got back from cummins

when they brought the new pump out i asked if it was smaller than the orig part

it sure looked like it was

they didnt know, said it was the only pn they had for my motor

got home and sure enough it is only about 2/3 the size of the orig

i take it this $113 cummins pump is the same exact thing as the $60 carter everyone is having the longevity probs with???

kinda makes the $600 fass sys not such a bad option, huh?

not thrilled but i will throw it on there and see what happens

don

out with the old... in with the new

idled perfect for about 10 mins

was low on coolant (remember, i did the thermostat before my last race)

was in the garage mixin up some more propo gyl stuff and it stumbled or reved, kinda hard to tell which, i wasnt in the truck, but it did it for about 5 secs and back to normal idle

is that normal after switchin out the lift pump?????

or is it the springs????

test drove it and man, what have i been missin! now it pulls hard to 3k in every gear

no reason to upgrade with new turbo and bigger intercooler inj and more pump mods

dont even know if there are more pump mods

must be, it only makes 30 psi w 14cm housing

or is all i can expect with pods?????

idling now infront of garage and sounds fine

has been running for more than 30 mins

whatcha think?

thanks

don

I suppose its possible that there was still a little air in there that finally made its way out. I'd say as long as it keeps idling fine, I wouldnt mess with it.
