My Brother is looking at a 2000 international crewcab hauler with a t44e :eek:motor guy says it's chiped and something about turbo . How good are theses motor's and what should we look for it has a 36 ft toyhauler trailer and the guy's asking 50 grand . Good Price or stay clear of it . I guess the people that own it are retired and done with traveling so they want to sell .

Thank you all for any info you can send my way .

I'd stay away from it. If it's been "chipped" and the turbo altered, it means the truck is underpowered, and it is. This is a vehicle that's over twice the weight of a pickup truck and with an engine rated lower than what is in a 3/4 ton Ford pickup.

I have many years of International truck sales and service experience and if I were buying an International truck for a "RV hauler" I wouldn't consider anything less the the DT530 inline 6 cylinder engine.

I don't have the foggiest idea what you guys are talking about, but if you jump over to the Escapees fourms, there is a group dedicated to Medium Duty trucks, and another dedicated to Heavy Duty trucks used for pulling RVs. I bet they could answer your questions.

Good luck... ... . Steve

Med duties with the t444 are real dogs. They just do not have the torque to pull with. They worked ok in small box trucks and in the local delivery business. If he is going to look at Internationals he needs to be looking at trucks with the DT line of engines, preferably the DT466 or the 530. Although they are not horsepower monsters they are torque monsters. Plus they are in frame rebuildable for about half the cost of doing a reman t444.

what is this Escapees fourm? no find it ?

this was the guys response to my brother's e mail is he fluffing it on fuel MPG or what and is this truck a good runner ?

The chip adds 50 hp. International Navistar builds the Powerstroke turbodiesel engine for Ford. The International T444 (same basic engine) in my truck has a bigger turbocharger, intercooler and exhaust than the Ford version. My engine is controlled by a different (than Ford) International engine computer and also the International factory engine warranty is for 250,000 miles. This truck has less than 56,000 miles on it. Fuel mileage is around 10 mpg and is about the same towing 18000 lbs or bobtailing depending on the terrain. It cruises easily down the freeway at 75 mph but I drive the speed limit. It has a short turning radius and I regularly park in normal auto parking spaces. In my view the advantages over a pickup are: towing capacity, a reliable transmission, bigger brakes, visibility, less driver workload and more peace of mind. There haven't been any major mechanical issues or collision damage.

I had a wrecker equipped the same way and it would not get out of it's own way, a dog! Lasted a long time but took forever to get up to speed. Now the 466 is a great engine, like night and day.

The escapee club is out of TX. It is and RV club that you can belonge to. Thay will regester your truck and camper in TX. that way you save on high taxs in some states. Thay are very large.

50k for a 8 year old truck with a powerjoke. . heck pick up a truck paper or go to their site, should be able to pick up a clean class 8 truck for that. Heck, a tricked out shiny new M2 is only 150k.
