Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need some HELP please!!!

The long of the short is: I removed the grid heaters last night. Made sure all parts were accounted for & no tools had fallen down into the intake plenum. I even used a magnet & my shop vac to remove any dirt etc. I did this 3 times total & also did a visual inspection w/ my surefire light. ALL parts were accounted for. . I even went to the point of laying them out on a white sheet of paper & mirroring them to each other. Put everything back together & started it up. While the engine is running I hear a knocking. . immediately I shut the engine down. This morning I wake up. . removing everything short of pulling the head (which is next). Checked the rocker arms. . nothing appears to be out of whack etc. So with the fuel lines off I decide to turn the motor over & see if I can hear the knocking w/o the sound of the engine. Engine turns over fine. . rockers arms are working in unison & NO hint of knock at all.



My question is this. . I am not saying I didnt make a mistake & something got sucked down in there, but IF it did make it past the valves & was sitting on top of the pistons would I not hear it while turning the motor over? Maybe I already know the answer & I should just pull the head. Anyway. . thank you for the help in advance!

About the only other thing I could suggest off hand would be to pull the injectors, bar the engine over so that the piston is at the bottom of its stroke in each one, and when it is look down the hole with a borescope. Of course, that assumes you have access to one!



Another thought might be to bar it over until either the intake or exhaust valve is wide open, then use a tube on an air gun from a compressor and blast a shot of air down the injector hole. You may blow out the object through the open valve, or at least hear it rattle around if something is in there.

Pull the injectors , then with flashlite , look into injector hole , piston near bottom , so you can see all of top of piston , to see if you can find part , & look for marks on piston .
Most of the time if some thing got in there the intake gets bent .

I am assuming this was all taken apart so you could do the injector swap. If so, your knock is fuel related an could be from a bad or leaking injector. Telling us what all you performed will help us diagnose it better.

Unfortunately no. . I didnt get that far. . b/c I had to run pick up my girlfriend & thought well hell this didnt take that long kinda of nice to see if there was any gain w/ removing the grid heaters. I feel like a dumb ***... I just got back from the Dodge dealer. . they dont have a exploded view of the parts for the grid heaters. Just thought I would double check against a parts list.



I really like looking down the injector idea... . I am in the middle of pulling those now. THANK YOU again to all of you. . unfortunately due to be overseas for my job I dont get on here enough. Go figure as soon as I get home I go to BOMBing & now I am paying the price! I will keep everyone posted.

You'll need you engine serial number off of the data plate on the side of the timing cover. From there you should be able to look for parts and parts diagrams. I remember finding some details for the grid heater setup here, don't remember how much though.

Woodenhead. . thank you. The Cummins server seems to be down so I will try again in a little while. Got dark on me & started to snow. . so I will see what the injector removal reveals in the morning. Thanks again for all the help. . should sleep a little easier tonight...
 
I don't think any thing big or heavy enough to cause a knock would have flowed into the engine at an idle. Maybe it is just a cold engine piston knock because of the lack of the grid heater heat.

You think? Now that I think about it. . the block heater was not plugged in & it had been siting for about 4 hours & the outside temp was 45F or so. I am in the middle of pulling the injectors now... . needed to drop these BD "40hp" injectors I had laying around in anyway so I will take a looksy. . but you bring up a interesting point. .

First I wanted to tell everyone in this thread THANK YOU!... . 2nd the problem was exactly the quote above. But the good news is after I pulled the injectors & found nothing in there. . I went ahead & did some mods to the AFC... . truck flat out hauls the mail now & pulls strong! :D As for the knock... I think I was just overly sensitive to my baby! I can now sleep... :)
