Hi All,

My 1996 3500 has a worn out steering box. When I tried to purchase a new one from Dodge, my dealer told me all that was available were Dodge reman steering boxes. I purchased and returned two from my Dodge Dealer last week and both of them were total crap! The steering wheel would immeadiately spin to the left when the engine was started on the first reman box and the second reman had such a stiff spot when centered that the steering wheel had to be constantly worked just to get down a straight road. I hope somebody out there can recommend a steering box source that we can trust to sell us a quality product the first time! It really sucks to take all the time to install a "new" box, twice only to have them be defective... ... ... thanks for nothing Dodge!

Thanks, Tom Falicon, BC, NC

That's strange. I just installed a Dodge reman and it works perfect. Got it from mopar4less, $301. 20.

Guess I am just lucky in this case, Reman AutoZone, $170, been working well over 10 months now. Put the faster ratio in though.

ME too! What he said. PSC 3 turn box SG-841M. Truck steers with one finger. Put a DSS on too to protect the box by keeping strain off of sector shaft. I'm satisfied.

I'm just getting into the steering issues on my 01... what is the DSS and where do you find it?

This is the company that came up with it.
Solid Steel. biz

It keeps the pitman shaft on the steering box from racking. Especially helpful if you're running big tires. Definitely add one if you are changing out your steering box.

Which one is the 3 turn box?

They have...

(SG-841M) '94-'02 Dodge Xtreme Duty Steering Gear [SG-841M]- 13-16:1

(SG-841MD) '93-'02 Dodge Cummins Diesel Steering Gear [SG-841MD]- 20:1 variable ratio

(SG-841MX) '94-'02 Dodge Steering Gear Light Valving [SG-841MX]

When I got mine year ago it was the the a 3 turn light-valving box PN "SG-841M" on the top of your list. My old order is still on their site and after just checking it here is the box I got:

"1 x (SG-841M) 94-02 Dodge Xtreme Duty Steering Gear $330" The price has gone up since then.

I also agree with the PSC box. I used the steering box brace on mine as well. I also highly recommend the upgraded steering pump.

I also need a Steering gear,

I was looking on PSC site and looking at the:

"Light valved (SG-841MX) '94-'02 Dodge Steering Gear Light Valving"

I have a 98 3500 4x4. Used for on road and only minor off road while towing 37 ft car hauler goose neck.

Would I be best to stay with the:

(SG-841M) '94-'02 Dodge Xtreme Duty Steering Gear

Thank you for any input.

I used the 841M and it definately has light valving. I love this one finger steering. As I recall, I called PSC at the time 2 yr ago when I seen the 841MX on their site and they said I should get the 841M. You might call PSC to verify.

For what it's worth I bought a Steering Box from Chip at Power Steering Services, Springfield MO about 3 years age and have had no problems. I changed my box because the Dodge Factory put in the wrong ratio box. It wandered all over the road. Now that I have the right ratio it steers like my cars. Phone "Chip" and he will steer you straight (no pun intended) 1-417-864-6676
