I had a set of the Toyo Open Country AT 285/70/17's on my truck, for the last 14 months, and have got 14k miles out of them and am in need of new tires. I did a lot of towing last summer (landscape/Sod/hardscape type stuff) and had the truck loaded up to 26. 5k quite a few times (with proper air pressures at all times - regligiously).
These tires were a good tire, but I don't think they can take all the work I threw at them. They also had a bit of a swaying (wagging) to them when you rocked the truck back and forth with the stering wheel, that the stockers didn't have, I noticed this 5 minutes after they were installed. I verified this because I have two identical trucks, one that still has the stock BFG Rugged Trails on it - and it does not do this.
I feel they are a softer compound and that is why the wore so quickly. Sure I saved $260 ($65 each), over the BFG AT's, but with the wear characteristics, I ended up loosing money in the long run.
I have always been hard on tires, and I know this. I got 22k out of the stock BFG Rugged Trails, and on my 2nd GEN gasser I got about 30K out of each of 4 sets of BFG AT's.
So I know how I wear tires, I'll never get the long 40 or 50K life some others here, report from the Toyo's or the BFG AT's, but getting double the life out of a tire (BFG AT vs. Toyo) that costs 21% more, makes good sense in my book.
But we also have a limited choice of tires with the E rating in the 285 size(not trying to start a E vs. D debate here). I choose to stick with the E rating last tire chage, but may forego that this time. I am looking for a good tire that will give *me* acceptable wear with *my* driving/towing style.
