Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) How much Boost can she handle?

I read about the set of twin turbos that guy put on his truck in the latest issue of TDR, i am super interested it a set, How much boost can the stock head handle without having to but larger head studs in it. . if i needed head studs how much of a pain in the butt is it to install?

I may stand corrected but I think the stock gasket can take up to 45-50 psi. That may be pushing it. As far as the studs most here have installed them one at a time starting from the center bolt. I have also read that it is a good idea to use a thread chaser to clean out the holes before you install the stud. The bolts at the rear of the head can be a little trouble due to tight clearance. Its been done many times by members here

Retorque the head bolts. If any feel like they are stretching replace those.

The stock head gasket can take more than 45-50. I have run mine to 55 or so many times with the retorque. I have heard of them going to 60-65 this way.

It seems as if you are repeating your original question. SHobbs has given you an excellent answer if you care to reread his reply. O rings are a popular mod to add although it requires removal of the cylinder head. At this point the stud install is quite simple.

True, I have never done this work before and not sure what is invloved. If i need to remove the head to put the new studs on or what it takes thats all.

No, the head does not need to be removed for stud install. Get a diagram of the proper sequence for torquing the head bolts and replace one bolt at a time with a stud, torquing each one as you go. I have heard of a 24V truck with original head gasket that hits 80 psi boost while sled pulling. Yes, he has studs and yes, he torques them before every pull.

Speaking from experience, most twin sets are efficient over 60psi. That said ringing the head is the only real way to go so you dont have to drive watching the boost gauge or worrying if you will make it home! Also timing, fueling, altitude, drive pressure, drugs and LUCK affect how much boost a head gasket can take. good luck!:-laf

how hard are the studs to replace?

I'm going to suggest you talk with a couple of diesel shops like Hasleys and Shieds and Peak diesel. ( there are more. )

If you follow the install instructions that should come with a set of studs, you won't get the latest info.

Most studs need to have the holes bottom tapped. This is tough to do with the head on it. A vacuum needs to be used to remove any chips.

Don't rely on just the info from web sites.
