have an 04. 5 Laramie heater selector knob turns fine but only blows from front. cant get it to defrost or floor heat. i can feel it click but nothing changes. defrost comes in very handy.

any hints? dont want to take it to shop.

You most likely have a broken blend door. Very common problem. Requires removal of the dash for replacement. Not an easy or inexpensive job, but as you said, "defrost comes in very handy. "

Do a search on "blend door"

crap, didnt think it was going to entail all that. thanks for the link (i think)

maybe i will take it in, looks like an engine overhaul would be easier.

appreciate the help.

Motofreak, it may just be the control head that controls all the blend doors. Check out post #3 here--https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/3rd-generation-ram-forum-no-engine-transmission-discussions/207665-cab-hvac-temp-problem.html

That's Why I don't Move the Knob in the Winter

Dunno if it will help long run, but after reading all the Blend-Door problems, I leave mine on the next to the last position (defrost w/ a bit of foot heat) all winter and then move it to the A/C - Fresh Air position for the summer.

My hillbilly logic is (1) Only move the door 2 times per year and (2) Only move the door when the temperature is warm (either ambient or w/ heater on).

As far as I can tell, the door movement mechanism does not operate when the key is turned off and on; i. e. , it only moves when the knob is rotated to a new position.

I know this doesn't help if it's already broken, but according to this forum, the replacement door is the same POS.

Does anyone know in what year did the updated blend doors make it into production trucks and are no longer an issue?

Thanks

I follow the same hillbilly logic too, still on my original for now...
