Think you can write a good tech piece on a performance product? Get rewarded for your work!

In Issue 63 (page 123) you read an introduction of a new intake manifold from the folks at Wilson Manifolds. We'll save you some time and reprint the text from Issue 63 here:

Wilson, a leading name in performance and racing induction systems, has expanded its product line with a new intake system for 5. 9-liter HPCR Cummins engines from '03 - '07.

In contrast with the OEM arrangement, this new induction system provides greater equality of air distribution, especially in the cruise zone of 2,000 to 2,100 rpm. As a result, the Thrasher generates gains in both torque and fuel economy, but also improves horsepower output, lowers exhaust temperatures, reduces exhaust emissions, and improves driveability.

The WIlson Thrasher Kit contains a cast alloy elbow, billet baseplate, stainless/Vitron rubber gasket, and all necessary fasteners. Installation takes about two hours.

A give-away is a great way to generate some buzz in the marketplace. The folks at Wilson agreed. So we are pleased to offer one of their $490 - '03 - '07 manifolds as the prize. Be sure to check out their website at Wilson Manifolds - Home or click on their banner ad.

So how does the Wilson Intake Manifold contest work?

- Send us a photo of you and a Wilson Sporting Goods item? Oops, wrong Wilson.

- Send us a photo of a night out when you had too much intake? Nope, this is a family-friendly website.

- Send us a photo of your manifold? Too boring.

How about about a contest where you become a TDR field correspondent? If you win this contest, you agree to submit your product evaluation of the Wilson Intake Manifold to the Turbo Diesel Register for publication. Although the contest is open to anyone, you will need access to a '03 - '07 5. 9-liter truck. Your evaluation should include mileage and horsepower tests from a dyno (if at all possible).

Sign up now to win the Wilson Thrasher Intake system and become the newest TDR field correspondent.

To enter, simply post a sentence or two about why you should be selected as our evaluator. We're not looking for the best writing. We're looking for enthusiasm and a genuine interest in the product.

Now get your pencils (oops, keyboards) out and enter now!

Questions? Email me at rpatton@ix.netcom.com.

I look forward to reading what you have to say!

* * Post your entry no later than April 30, 2009.

Robert… are we to enter the contest for the Wilson Intake manifold to you at this address?

If so…

My name is David Layton. I have been a turbo diesel truck owner since November of 97. Since that time, I have purchase a 2000 24 valve Cummins. I then needed a crew cab and I purchased a 2006 Chevy Duramax. The Chevy just wasn't' me! After installing about $20,000 of accessories onto that truck, I decided to sell it and get back to my roots. Last October I purchased a used 2006 5. 9 liter Cummins. It is a Laramie 2500 MegaCab. After just having the truck for two days, I installed an Edge Juice with attitude (I had an Edge Comp on my 2000 and an Edge Evolution on my 06 Chevy). As you can see, I can't just leave well enough alone. I now have a BD towing twin turbo setup with an AFE intake and an ATS exhaust manifold. I also have installed a Kore Leveling kit along with a few other mods.

So what is the truck missing (besides some Dynomite Diesel Injectors and a Goerend fully built billet transmission)? It needs a Wilson Thrasher Intake system. After looking at the Wilson Website, I am very excited to have a chance to win one of these beautifully machined intakes. I live in Las Vegas and am looking forward to May Madness this year. Would there be a better place to show off the new intake? I don't think so. Depending on when the Intake could be delivered, I may actually be able to do the install at May Madness. I have been around the TDR for a long time, but I have only attended one other get together. It was way back in the late 1990's in Kellogg, Idaho. I didn't get to meet too many of the TDR people, but did have a great time! I can't wait for the get together this year!

I love this new Dodge and tell everyone I know about the TDR (I have been a member longer than I have been driving Dodges, unless you count those dark years that I owned a Duramax lol). I am a Fire Captain for North Las Vegas. This provides me the time to travel with my family and trailer. My three dodges have been flawless (unless you count the pulling problem that Dodge couldn't get figured out on the 98 and bought it back!) The only problems other than the brake pull, have been my own fault! Read, I am my own warranty station, LOL, as you have put it so many times (and yes, I did melted a motor on the 2000 while towing and having my EGT gauge go out on me). I have installed all the parts on my Dodges myself. On the Chevy, I did not and I missed the connection to the truck, so I am doing all the wrenching on my new truck myself (with the exception of the transmission install. I will have it done by a shop)

So, there it is, a little about myself. I know I am not the best writer (luckily I don't need writing skills to put out fires and help on medical calls!) Please put my name in the entry! I would love to have the opportunity to show off the Wilson Thrasher Intake System on my 06 Cummins!!

Thanks again.

Wilson Manifold's. . wow their stuff oozes performance! Just one look at the Thrasher and you know its much more than a flashy piece, it's huge outlet and special billet baseplate should offer some serious air flow.

I would love to get that bad boy on my truck for some testing. Hard part will be leaving it in the box a few extra days while I do some loaded & unloaded data recording for comparison after the install. Camera batteries will have to be fully charged because TDR readers will want all the details and we all know- "Threads without pics are worthless" :D

This is a sweet looking piece of hardware no doubt. I've looked at other intakes but all are limited by the size of the throat in the baseplate. Wilson has taken it above and beyond by making a new baseplate too!

I've emailed Wilson directly with a couple questions I have regarding the product and it's compatibility with some of the other systems on my truck. If it will work with a dual cp3 kit we may just see one of these on my truck this sled pulling season! Another excuse to get back to the dyno!

What about the rest of us? My truck is a 1999. In the last ten years I have done numerous upgrades; I have a lot of experience. Someone with a 07 hasn't had the truck long enough to even break it in. An owner of a 03 might be able to offer some history. However, think about what you would get if you offered one that fit an older truck. We have been around for a while and know what is good and not so good for our trucks. Maybe Wilson does not make an intake for us; if that is the case. Why not? Someone needs to tell them that these Dodge trucks last a life time and if they only make a product that fits the 03 to 07 they are missing about 90% of the market. I have had my truck for ten years; drove it off the lot with 7 miles on it, over 200,000 now. Getting broke in nicely, seen the Arctic Ocean, Baja California and hundreds of places between. Not the same truck that I bought from the Dodge dealer; it is much better because of all the after-market products I have on it. That thrasher sure is shinny, wonder if it works as good as it looks?

This looks like an awesome Product. My son has 'volunteered' to remove my AFE and put it on his truck if I was lucky enough to win. Darn, kids can be so generous sometimes! I don't post too much, only if I feel strongly about something or have personal experience with an issue that someone hasn't covered. The Wilson Thrasher Intake has a hugh opening. It would be fun to test and report. Toys, toys, toys. What next?:-laf

I'm w/Harlacher - my 99 has 175k miles, just about 100k more than when I bought it in 01. Part of the 100 k we've put on her were road trips from our home in East PA to: Yellowstone twice, Grand Canyon once, Florida Keys twice, Colorado Springs four times And, if you check out my signature, it has a few decent bombs and turns a pretty respectable bout on the dyno rollers. A few of my buddies and have discussed the gain potential of doing something with the intake on our 98. 5 - 02 24 valvers, other than just slapping an after-market intake horn on it. What I'm saying is we recognized the plate that the horn and grid heater attach to - I haven't seen anyone do anything with this plate. Being old hot rod-ers we recognized the location of the air inlet on the plate as "duh" forward instead of in the middle = better distribution, and there are some folks out in TDR land that have taken to removing material from the plenum below the plate to "smooth" things out in an effort to help air flow as well.

"If" Wilson Manifold should consider development of something for our 98. 5 - 02 engines it would be great if they could figure out an easy way for the "average Joe" (note my handle :-laf) to bolt on some performance. It would also be great if they were able to relocate the air inlet "hole" in the middle of the plate.

In case there's any doubt in my cause here - "Hey Wilson Manifold, are you guys working on something for us 98. 5 - 02 24 valvers ?" And, "If you are I'd be more than willing to give it a tour on top of mine and provide data. "

This "data" would range from ease of installation, quality of product, initial pre and post installation thoughts, seat of pants opinion, mileage increase/decrease, before and after dyno results and overall report of worthiness = "should you get this for your Dodge".

Thanks,

Joe Mc

I have read several articles about the new Wilson Trasher manifold and would love to win this manifold for my 2007 5. 9L Cummins. As an avid RV'er I know the Wilson will add enjoyment to pulling my trailer while keeping the EGT lower and MPG higher. What a great combination. The Wilson intake is a beautiful piece of hardware that will add looks as well as performance to my truck. . Besides, I always wanted to try my hand add evaluating a product and writing an article about the product. This is a great contest to do both improve my trucks performance and try my hand at writing a product review. Thank you TDR and Wilson for the opportunity!

I'm an old hotrodder from the 50's and always trying new things to get a little more power and economy out of my 2001 TD without "bombing" it. I constantly read the threads relating to new products and then research them to see if they will really help my relatively stock TD or will I have to invest more money in other upgrades to make them work. I have recently been evaluating the new intake manifolds and am partial to the CFM Composit one but haven't been able to justify the cost. I use my truck as a daily driver, pull a 25' travel trailer and a 16' stock trailer and will soon be taking an RV trip to Colorado. I could give a good evaluation after that trip on any additional pulling power or mpg improvements. I have tried various programmers and power boxes and finally settled on the Edge EZ and Smarty for the best combo suited to my driving and needs. I would "love" to try a new and improved intake manifold.

Between my son ,daughter, and myself I've got a2002, 2004, 2005 to compare the out come of a new manifold. In addition I tow a 3-horse gooseneck trailer with the 04 and 05 that would make a great comparison, plus I'm an over-all nice guy. I could also let you know how it compares with my old 99 that had a DR. Performance phase two upgrade. thanks, John Walker

This is Too Cool

Dear TDR,

I would love to be considered for this contest and the write up. I believe that this would be the logical next addition to my 03 CR. I own a small business under my name, Sorrells Performance where I install exhaust, intakes, programmers/chips, towing accessories, and trailer repaire. I am an engineer by trade, so I have had some technical writing classes. I am also pretty well versed in presenting my ideas and testing to the aerospace world. I am a genuine lover of all things mechanical, but since owning my cummins I wish I could make everything a diesel! Please consider me and my truck for your contest.

Dan Sorrells

The manifold sounds like a great addition to my 1992 D250.

I've dyno'd my old mule at 308hp/668tq. There is a dyno locally, so I can do a before-and-after comparison. I've kept a spreadsheet up-to-date on all fuel expended and mileage for more than 100,000 miles, so I could easily show the effects on mileage.

The beauty of installing the manifold on a first-gen is that the benefits will be directly attributable. There's no computer that will adjust other parameters when it finds it has additional air-flow. We'll see it immediately.

It is not that Wilson does not wish to make a product for you guys or even adapt it. The problem with the 2nd gen 24v trucks is that the fuel lines would have to be moved around since they interfere with the back of the manifold. For the intake to fit your trucks, Wilson would have to include new fuel lines to replace the which interfere making the kit more than it is.

I'd love to win one of these and also love to give an opinion about it's performance.

I'm just a regular 'joe' or should I say 'josie' who uses my truck to work and work hard meeting the needs of my animals and pleasures. I do all of my own maintenance and wrenching, probably one of the few women who gets into all the details of truck ownership. I find working out the details of performance very exciting, both in the challenge of making something better and ultimately the satisfaction of a job completed that does what it was intended to acomplish.

I tow heavy loads on a regular basis that are right in the neighborhood of 16-18K up and down steep grades in mountains - hay, grain, fencing materials, etc and need all the performance enhancements I can get to lower my EGT's, give me good fuel mileage, and keep my truck running to the best state of perfection and preservation as possible.

I also pull trailers carrying my Bobcat, small dozer, tractor, and other necessary equipment to support my small ranchette.

When I have some spare time, I travel pulling a 5th wheel or a bumper pull travel trailer, both of which are in the 10-12K range.

I think I have a good cross reference of pulling experiences that speak to how the average 'joe/josie' might put this manifold to work in everyday use. I have access to a dyno to compare it's output performance over stock numbers, but I think the 'use' and going down the road pushing what could be called daily extremes is a valuable bit of information.

Whether I would win this contest or not, I will strongly consider installing one of these manifolds.

Old trucks NEVER die

I'm with the other first genners! I now have 277,000 :D on mine, get GREAT mileage (well for something that big at least) and pretty good performance. It is just a daily driver, nothing special, but a few things to 'hop it up a bit' wouldn't be a bad thing! Trouble is, there are getting to be fewer and fewer things available out there. :{

count me in

I'd like to win this intake manifold because I think it would be a great start to the bombing of my new 2003 ram.

The truck is bone stock, and will slowly become a beast. I test and document each part addition to verify if there is an improvement over the part it replaces.

I would be honored to write a fair evaluation for the TDR if selected.

Tony

I would love to win the Wilson Thrasher. I am very interested in seeing if it helps out with spooling up my II Silverbullet 66. I am also wondering if it might help my #6 cylinder stay a little cooler, we lost our motor last year due to #6 melting down. I think I have the perfect truck to test this bad boy out on. We will be hitting dyno events and running on the NHRDA Northwest division circuit. Lots of mountain passes between us and where most of our events are held. Our truck dynoed at 603RWHP with the Banks highram. I bet we can sqeak out a few more ponies with this manifold. It's nice to see contests like this being promoted here and by manufacturers like Wilson. My hat is off to you guys, this is definitely a benefit of being part of this register.

Thanks, Mike

Please add my name for the free wilson drawing. My 06 mega is bone stock except for the bumpers. I always planned on making improvements but then my mother-in-law moved in and now I find it hard to rub a few quarters together for such luxury items. However, even married with kids plus a mother-in-law can afford free!!!
