Your absolutely right that we shouldn't have to defeat the engine systems to make the truck run correctly in situation we drive in. But that's just not the real world. As mentioned above the gov. doesn't care. But I, the end user, do. Case in point, the emission stuff on my wife's Liberty CRD. The egr and CCV are poorly designed. Left stock, they cause lots of problems (like the CCV dumping quarts of oil into the IC over a period of 4-5K miles). The truck is out of warranty and I'm not going to spend the money and time to remove and clean the IC every so often. Besides I want 300K out of this thing and it just isn't going to do that with the intended emissions equipment. So the end user has to decide how they want their truck to run and the risk of problems that might occur with the changes, legal or otherwise. That's the games we play in this "free" country.
I must say, I would have to "hallow out" that garbage and then put the "foolers" on the sensors. A simple catalyst works fine, but these complex DPF things cause more potential damage than good. EGR is even worse. Combine all this with the "closed crankcase" system and you have a world of unreliable mess. EGR is disabled, Crankcase vent is open and catalyst is 'hallow" on my Mercedes and Liberty. No problems at all. Still appears stock, but operates like it SHOULD be allowed to do now!
