Your absolutely right that we shouldn't have to defeat the engine systems to make the truck run correctly in situation we drive in. But that's just not the real world. As mentioned above the gov. doesn't care. But I, the end user, do. Case in point, the emission stuff on my wife's Liberty CRD. The egr and CCV are poorly designed. Left stock, they cause lots of problems (like the CCV dumping quarts of oil into the IC over a period of 4-5K miles). The truck is out of warranty and I'm not going to spend the money and time to remove and clean the IC every so often. Besides I want 300K out of this thing and it just isn't going to do that with the intended emissions equipment. So the end user has to decide how they want their truck to run and the risk of problems that might occur with the changes, legal or otherwise. That's the games we play in this "free" country.

I must say, I would have to "hallow out" that garbage and then put the "foolers" on the sensors. A simple catalyst works fine, but these complex DPF things cause more potential damage than good. EGR is even worse. Combine all this with the "closed crankcase" system and you have a world of unreliable mess. EGR is disabled, Crankcase vent is open and catalyst is 'hallow" on my Mercedes and Liberty. No problems at all. Still appears stock, but operates like it SHOULD be allowed to do now! :D AND, no or very little smoke... partially thanks to my veggie oil blend...

Those mods will not be a viable option once the smog testing becomes a reality and the can bus smog machines are on line.

Well, here is the response from Cummins. I'm totally disappointed in their lack of response. They have written two lines and offered little help (use clean fuel and have the catalyst empty... . ) and absolutely no solution! Read on.

You have contacted Cummins Inc. at our Customer Assistance Center in

Columbus, Indiana. This is our worldwide headquarters and has been our

home since Clessie Cummins founded the company, here, in February of 1919.

This year marks our 90th anniversary in business and we will continue to

work to provide the kind of products and service that will keep us in

business for another 90 years.

Richard, you will need to ensure the truck has the lowest soot capacity

possible before starting your trip. You will want to use clean fuel as

additives could cause unknown effects to the catalyst.

We are happy to provide information and assistance to our customers,

however, our distributors and dealers are our primary points of sales and

are the proper place to inquire about availability and prices of Cummins

products.

To locate the nearest Cummins-authorized Dealer or Distributor Service

Provider call our toll free customer assistance line 1-800-DIESELS

(343-7357) or for computer assistance in locating a Service Provider, use

Cummins Service Locator, which can be found on Cummins website:

Im hoping someone has a solution for the "Catalyst Full" syndrome. Last September i was in the back country elk hunting and my Catalyst percent keep getting higher and higher.

Getting in, we drive approximately 45 miles back in at slow speeds, the terrain is very rugged and you must go slow there is no opportunity to drive at highway speeds for regeneration. After a couple of days driving in the back country my Catalyst keep reading higher and higher and I know that it got to at least 90%, and it could have been higher. I was very concerned that I would have a shut down 45 miles back in terrain where a vehicle couldn't even be towed from easily. Any ideas? What i did do was to put the truck into 4 low and then in 1st and it seemed to hold things steady.

Need some help before this occurs again in Sept. '09. Can we just not use our trucks off road

The latest software allows regens to occur under low speed and even idle conditions now. Get the up dates and if you use ulsd you should be fine
