I was on the hi-way when my water pump broke and I lost a lot anti-freeze, lost heat in cab and the temp started to climb but did not hit the red line. I was less than a 1/4 mile from a rest stop and was able to shut it off. The time from start to finish was about 5 mins. My Question is did i do any damage to the engine.

Welcome to TDR, the webs BEST resource for info about your truck... .

If it didn't redline and you got it shutdown in 5 minute, and drove only a 1/4 mile, I'd say there is no way that you damaged anything internal.

Too bad about your water pump... how many miles on it??

Also, it would help if you posted your truck info iwith your sig... Use the "edit my profile" link when you are logged in.

Thanks seafish for getting back so soon, now i can sleep to night.
I just hit 150k, I'm still trying to figure out the hole setup stuff.
Russ.

I recently experienced water pump issues on my o4. 5 i would not reccomend an autozone pump. quality is poor if any quality. as far as your cummins. I have heard somewhere they can go 500 miles like that because of the oil capacity and spraying oil on the bottom of the pistons. but i cant valid it. throw a new pump on it maybe even a belt if it looks rough and try it out. if it leaks or runs rough go from there. 5 minutes shouldnt hurt from my 15 minutes of hot experience.

On the Interstate and heard a thump. went to change lanes and no power steering - hit the brakes and rock hard pedal - check gauges light and battery gauge low - knew then the thump was the belt letting go. Pulled over and had a waterfall down the front of the block. It's amazing how much coolant is in these engines when you see it running on the ground. Water pump just came apart. Still had 4 months on the 7 year warranty.

I drove about 6 miles after blowing a freeze plug out of my 03. No damage done. Much more difficult to fix than a water pump however...
