I just got back from getting smog check. To answer the above question exhaust breaks aren't a problem as I have a PacBreak.



I PASSED the smog check and here is the information on sheet as it applied to my 2001: (I tried to duplicate how the sheet visually looked as best I could)

Before I went down to have check the only things I took off were the VanAken (even though it has CARB D-500 number) and the boost fooler. Also note that wastegate is plugged. There was no question on the ATS air horn, AfE air cleaner, PacBreak, trans controller, gages, etc. The only thing that was even looked at twice was my breather, and that was because I trashed bottle and moved it over to driver side with a K&N baffled breather to eliminate climbing under truck, misting and draining which is now done by a tube in fender well. He followed hose over to breather watched that, saw no smoke and moved on. My suggestion is to go to a shop that has diesel knowledge. This shop raced diesels in Pikes Peak and off road. I think that way you won't have to go over thing like "whats that" on 2 low switches, exhaust break, 4" exhaust, etc. I think most will pass this worthless test and panic is for naught.



As you note in my input above the VanAken has a CARB number on it and is ok on 1998 1/2 to 1999 trucks, but since I have a 2001 I took it off. I questioned this with the shop, since the engine is the same is it good assuming it will pass snap test? Their response was this crap is so new they couldn't give me a definitive answer. I'm in the process of contacting VanAken for their take on this. If and when I get something back I'll post.

yep your right fixit, bs. you have to fix it before due or incur addition charge as on notice. you can apply for funds if you can't pay, or they will give you $1000 to junk. applying for funds and junking are probably the same as impound :-laf maybe thats what happens in tar heel state?? but not here.

right. . I could not see why it would not be any different than a gasser for smog. about the junk it part... . I went through one of those freeway on ramp smog machines and later got a letter that my vehicle was a gross polluter. could take it in for a test and get assistance $$$ or junk it for $1000... a $30k truck. When I called, they told me the machine could not tell mine was a diesel so they said to ignore the letter and they would take me off their list. My guess is I am on a list somewhere.

I always turn the key off and coast through these stupid drive by inspections... .

I did that with my Jetta (stick) and they wanted my car to do tests on. Its a TDI and they offered me $$$ and a rental. I declined.

They don't impound your vehicle here for failing. You're issued an extension. Next comes a "fixit only"station to detirmine the cause and remedy. Retest.

Just passed no problem even with Smarty jr. loaded on. Interesting tidbit mine is an 04. 5 and in the book he has to look up for a 04 since that's what it is and said only thing was the PVC and said nothing about the catalytic since that started in 04. 5

did your information sheet have the same pass or n/a in the catagory's as mine posted above? just to compare. what kind of smog check shop did you go to? this info might help guys with different years.

To me it would of been simpler to mail the state 10. 00 and call it a day it's really all they want is the money

:-laf your right, its really a farce. you dispelled another rumor about no muffler you fail. also there is no ob2 connection to check codes or anything else. appears to be engine light only. it'll be interesting to see if anyone experiences anything different, but i doubt it.

Your OBDII connection is under the dash on the right side on a 2nd gen.

sorry, i wasn't clear on my statement. i meant that the smog check station does not plug into it to check codes. i made sure before i went that i plugged into mine to make sure there were no codes. i had heard that they (smog check station) were going to look for stored codes. so far that isn't true. i'll try to be more clear next time.

FAILED

I called a local Diesel shop and they recommended the SMOG shop. It was a smog test-only shop. Before officially starting the test, I asked the technician/owner to unofficially check the smoke. We did a few snap tests, and he eventually said that it'd pass the visible smoke check, but just barely. He asked if there was anything wrong with the vehicle, and I said no because there isn't. It's in great shape.

We ran it into his shop, and he hooked up his computer to something under the dash. A few minutes later he told me it'd failed!

Fault codes:
P0401: EGR Flow Insufficient
P0463: Fuel Level Sensor CKT High Input

He also pointed out that the Check Engine Light never came on.

Any ideas on how to fix this and the cost? My registration is due at the end of April.

I would mail your money in so you don't get penalized the smog will be done electronically from the smog station they won't mail the sticker till they receive payment and the smog. Curious on your check engine light does it come on when you first turn the key on? and are we talking about your 12v in the sig? Try going on the 12v forum with your questions too.

A friend with a muffler shop set me up with his smog check guy and I passed. I watched the snap test and there was no visable smoke but that was all he did besides a visual under the hood. I don't think he connected an OBDII. My 04. 5 is stock with only 43,000 miles and is in excellent condition.

I thought the 12 valves were not being smogged, only the 1998. 5 24 valve and up.

I verified a while back that the state is requiring all '98 and up models, including '98 12V, to be smog checked.

No, the check engine light does not come on. I've owned the vehicle for three years, and I've never noticed the absence of the light, but the technician pointed out that even on a 98 12V, the check engine light should come on. It could be burned out, it could be disabled by the previous owner... I don't know.

Where are guys taking their diesels in Orange County for the test?

Do you still have an egr valve & a tube from the intake to the exhaust manifold crossing over the top of the valve cover?

Years ago guys did many strange things to disable the egr witch gave a check engine light,so many disabled that too.
