Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Fuel Solenoid Broke

Fuel Solenoid Broke and the guts fell out. It was the original and lasted for 178,000mi. The truck wouldn't start and the Fuel Solenoid was the first thing that came to mind. I had someone spin the starter and I pulled the fuel shut off lever on the pump up and it started and I drove in the rest of the day. Love those simple 12 valve engines.

Last summer I had the same problem a few hundred miles from home. I completed this "temporary" repair in the Amarillo Flying J parking lot. At one time I was a helicopter mechanic and am pretty good at safety wiring and always carry a roll of stainless steel . 032 wire in the tool box. That was about 50k miles ago and the fix is still working. Ditch that old boot, clean up the plunger and bore and drive on. If you insist on a new solenoid I'll take the old one off your hands, I'd like to carry a spare

You must have lost the hair pin and it came off the arm. The boot is what actually holds every thing together.

That is incorrect. I trashed the boot at around 150k, the plunger didn't come apart until about 600k. The rod snaps into the plunger and that lip wears out.

The hair pin was still on the pump holding the lower part of the plunger on. The plunger came apart in the middle where it snaps together. I think I'll rig it back together for a spare like Games suggested.
