A friend of mine purchased a 2010 F-350 Harley Davison edition with the 6. 4 liter powerstroke motor (list price of $64K!). He spent a lot of time with the service tech and claims that Ford has communicated that Rotella not be used in their engines!

I find that hard to believe..... had anyone else heard this? Can that motor be that sensitive?... ... .

that service guy doesn't know what he is talking about, as it is "UNLAWFULL" for a manufacturer to tell you what brand of oil should or should not be used in your engine!

They may be referring to the notion that the 6. 4 doesnt like the Rotella... Could be talking about CI rated Rotella???? I really dont care for Rotella, it doesnt seem to perform well in the engines I see on a regular basis... (much larger, harder working engines) There are better oils out there... . of course there are worse ones too. . But then again... we ARE talking 6. 4L PSD... . Basically, if you run it long enough to need new oil, the oil pan is prolly coming off anyway!!... hahahha. . J/K...

A while ago I thought Ford came out and said the original Rotella CJ-4 blend was foaming because of the HPOP and HEUI 6. ohno injection system. Rotella addressed it pretty quickly and added a new or more anti-foaming agent to the Rotella. I swear I read about this. Someone clear the fog in my head whether I am right or wrong please.

I remember the foaming incident - but forget the brand name or oil grade...

Rotella

I remember a teacher I had in school 10 years ago saying that rotella would not stand behind their oil when used in powerstrokes. Not saying it isn't a good oil I think they were just protecting themselves. I don't know if this is still the case today.

The harmonics are a nightmare on the 6. 4, some owners have complained about knocking immediately after changing oil,But thats NOT the oils fault. I have heard complaints no matter whats in the crank case. although some oils dampen it more then others.

I got some more clarification... According to my friend, the Ford tech said that the Rotella was "eating the seals" and that if they discovered that oil in the pan they would not warranty the engine. He also mentioned that the knocking noise has driven them to recommend only dino oil - no synthetics. Ford has gotten so strict that whenever you bring the truck in for service they take pictures of the truck, the engine compartment, the odometer and anything else of interest for comparison purposes. If anything is non-stock you are black listed... . even if you change the exhaust tip. Fault codes can never be completely cleared either.

Wow... . talk about big brother watching you!

Ford still ising HP oil pump for injectors? How about the new Ford designed Scorpion? Does it still use HP engine oil to run the injectors?

Well here is matrix regarding use of Rotella oil from shells website

Note that under Cummins engines it specifically states

"All on-highway diesel engines except 2007 ISB engines in Dodge pick-up trucks. "

- SHELL ROTELLA® OEM LUBRICANT RECOMMENDATIONS

If Navistar is still producing the ford engines ( I cant remember after the fallout they had with Navistar a few years ago) then it says they are good to go though it doesnt appear to meet any specific specs like the cummins standards ie CES 20081, CES 20077, CES 20076,

CES 20071

Wow..... makes one wonder if that could possibly be a typo and the word "except" should have instead read "including"... ... . especially if they're mentioning DPF cleaning intervals... ... ...
