Need exhaust brake for my 05, 6speed

Give me some pro's and cons of the ones out there??

live in SW New Mexico, need a good installer??

any help appreciated, Rocky

I love my Pacbrake, had it for 2 1/2 yrs, 180k miles. Works great, I have no other exeriance with any other brand.

The compressor has just went down, so I need to replace it, that's the only issue I've had.

The only questionable brake IMO is the Jake. I say this not because it doesn't perform well (it does) but because the belt driven vac. pump is so prone to failure. Other than that, they all seem to give good performance and long life.

Ron, have you replaced the relay on top of the pump? Thats the only part I've known to sometimes fail. You can get it at NAPA for $16.

Hey Prairie Dog,

It was not pumping enough pressure to shut the pressure switch off, and it was leaking air back out the intake so I took the compressor head off and found the ring (I guess it is called) torn almost in two.

I ran the Jacobs exhaust brake on my '01 Ram 325,000 miles with one vacuum pump failure somewhere around 200k miles. The replacement pump is still on the truck and works fine.

My '06 48RE with Jacobs exhaust brake had a vacuum pump failure at under 100k and was replaced. I sold the truck at 230k with the second one working normally.

Jacobs vacuum pump failures were nowhere near as common as some folks believe.

the bd and the pac work a lot better than the jake or banks. i like bd over the pac simply because of where the compressor mounts. we have gone back and relocated the compressors on the pac's. i guess i am not as lucky with my vacuum pumps as others. my pumps fail at the most inconvient times and place. one failed on me near pecos texas near 6 pm on a friday nearly made it to town before the serpentine belt melted and it was tuesday before i got on the road. sight seeing in pecos texas in july for four days is not my idea of vacation. we have had enough pumps fail that i keep a bd in stock and as soon as one fails i change it to bd. and i like the extra braking power of the bd especially at the lower rpm

I've had a PacBrake since my truck was new, never a problem, always did it's job. Recently I went to twins, had to move it, so I got the PacBrake in-line, it's every bit as good as the elbow brake just behind the turbo. I'm sold on the PacBrakes. Some of my friends have the Jacobs that is a factory install for our trucks, they have all had nothing but problems with theirs, expensive repairs when the warranty goes.

I second the idea of mounting the Pac compressor someplace besides the top of the eng ~ unless you live someplace really cold. It must cook up there and it just looks kind silly when you open the hood IMO.

I've had the "Jacobs" E-Brake on my truck since new (Jan 2003) and have very good results with it. current milage is 93K PLUS. I installed it my self.

Check out the towing section on this site. There is 5 pages of discussion as to who thinks there's is better.

I have hit my compressor with an infra red temp gun, the temps are really not that high where Pac suggests mounting them on the engine. If you look at BD's brake install, they mount the compressor in behind the right side fenderwell liner, it probably is a cooler place to mount it, but would be a PITA to deal with if you needed to work on it. You would have to remote mount the aux air hose connector. I remotely mounted my aux hose connection anyway, made it easier to use it. I have seen compressors mounted under the battery box/air box area, also mounted vertically next to the radiator on the pass side, all are nice places for mounting. You'd need to lengthen the wiring for the solenoid control wiring, but that is doo-able, just make sure you use the shrink type waterproof splices.

The install is straight forward, easy to do, basic tools, you really do not need someone else to install it for you. Do it in segments so it's not so confusing or overwhelming. Took me about 3 to 3-1/2 hours, but I always have a lot of interruptions so I cannot tell you the timeframe for sure. I also installed the clutch switch and the shifter switch mount instead of the dash mount switch. I started the install right after lunch and was done before suppertime.

I lost my Pac compressor after four years. Something happen to the electrical relay and it ran for a long weekend (4 days) sitting in the parking lot at the Atlanta airport. Put in a 100% duty cycle compressor up under the bed on the pax side and it has been fine from -10F to +110F.

As far as the brake goes, I love my Pac. 115k miles on my front pads with lots of towing.

I have a JAKE that has been on the truck from new and is working very good never had any trouble. JAKE and your DODGE dealer can put it on .
