I was backing out of a H. Depot parking space last week when a 6-7 Y. O. boy emerges from behind my truck. He was running from his mother and I never saw him until he had already ran past me. That scared me even though I was going slow and probably never got closer than 10 ft. from him.

My truck sits high and has a camper shell so there's a large area back there that I can't see very well even with good mirrors.

I had a B U camera on my prev. truck but it had a small screen and I was never really satisfied with the quality of it.

Ideally, if available, I would like one that is maybe integrated with a GPS and a radio/CD.

Any ideas or recommendations.

TIA for any info. on this, Ray

Kenwood Excelon KVT-696 Just installed with a back-up camera 7 inch screen. I really like this Kenwood, The GPS system is a bit exspensive to add on, but gives you many options to how you can set up the stereo.

I totally avoid backing up if at all possible. When I park at HomeDepot or any other parking lot, I pull through the space so that when I leave, I won't have to back up. This requires me to park in the lower 40 where there are not many car and trucks around and since I have a dually, I take up two spaces. Plus the little extra walking is good for me.

+1 on never back up if you don't have to, Griz. Always try to park so you can drive out. It is far safer to back in and drive out than vice versa. Driveway, garage, parking lot -- it doesn't matter.

A commercial truck (loud) back up beeper would be cheaper, though not as techno-flashy as a camera system. I use one when I plow snow. I can bypass it with a toggle switch when I don't want it. It gets attention.

You can also mount some utility floodlights (mine are under my bumper) that not only leave no doubt to anyone behind you that you are in reverse, but they also actually make it easier to see when it's dark. (what a concept!)Regular backup lights are a joke. Again, reverse floodlights are standard equipment for my truck since I plow snow.

There are companies that now market a receiver hitch mount with floodlights and you could easily add a beeper. It just plugs in to your trailer light plug (a 4-flat or round doesn't have reverse, though, so you need to upgrade to a 5, 6, or 7 pin if you haven't already. ). Easy to build yourself, too.

The new Edge Attitude CS/CTS upgrade screens have the ability to add a backup camera. The camera is supposed to come on the screen in reverse. I have the camera & the CTS screen, just haven't installed the backup camera yet.

The way Edge uses the license plate bolts with a bulky bracket and the Edge camera is pretty good size, looking for something less obvious or a different way to mount the camera.

If you don't have the license plate camera, where is a good place to mount it? I would like to use mine to hitch my trailer and as a rear view when the trailer isn't there.

I have seen trucks with back up cameras drilled through the center of the license plate, in the small bed panel just above the license plate, or in the tailgate.

The Edge CTS does have a back up camera but only comes on in reverse on certain models. Don't know which ones it works on ; just know it doesn't work on my 1999. Screen is a bit small but you get a very wide angle of everything behind you. I have to push the menu button then turn the camera on with mine. A real pain in the *****, would not have bought it if I had know it would not come on automatically.

I have a Peak back up camera with a 7" monitor. It works pretty good and has a good picture. It is designed to mount on the license plate but I made a mount for it that is on the trailer hitch receiver so it looks at the ball hitch as an aid in hooking up my trailer as well as a normal backup camera when the trailer is not in use. I bought another Peak kit with the smallest monitor (they don't sell parts) in order to get another camera and transmitter. I rigged that camera on the back of the trailer. That works well for backing up and as an on the road aid to see what kind of idiot is tailgating me. I use a double throw toggle switch to selected which camera is in use. The kit is designed to come on with reverse, but I did not use that option.

sorry, i should have phrased that a little differently. I know the camera has to be wired or powered off of the reverse lights on the Edge. Like I said I haven't tried it yet, may mount the camera minus the bracket to the back pan of the bed under the tailgate.

Go to rvcams.com. They have all the kits and the prices are good. I just put one on the back of my 40ft. 5th wheel. Works great.

Grizzly, didn't you just tell me a few days ago that driving around in a dually ISN'T a pain??? :-laf

Anyway, we just picked up our new 2011 Honda Odyssey which has a really sweet backup camera that would be nice to retrofit onto our trucks. The camera is about the size of a pencil-end eraser, yet is clear for 20 feet and has 3 modes: Close, far, and straight down. Screen is about 8 inches diagonal. If somebody made a camera for our trucks like that, I would strongly consider it.

It's no pain at all. I park in the lower 40 because I want to. I can park my truck on a regular spot if I want.

I don't mind the extra walk.
