How much labor to do an oil pressure test and change oil pressure sending unit?

Had my truck towed to a small Dealership, they charged me 2. 3 hours @ $105 per, plus $ 51. 29 for the sending unit and $62. 40 for a Retainer ??? They did have to remove the left fender liner as my engine compartment is busy with hydraulic brake lines for the rear disc brakes.

I did mine in less than an hour.
I didnt remove the inner fender either.
IMO 1 hr labor should have been plenty for someone who does this for a living.

BTW My truck is a 98 12 valve. They should be the same.

Edit: an oil pressure test shouldnt add more than 15-20 mins to that. Pretty simple/basic mechanic stuff.

I agree, but if the flat rate book pays 2. 3 hours you get banged for 2. 3 hours. And I'm sure they penalized him for having to go in through the fender well liner and banged him for the plastic rivets (@ $5 a pop) to reattach it. There was blood in the water and a feeding frenzy resulted.

Just a guess.

I'm too honest, which is probably why I didnt make it as a mechanic. :D

I would charge a customer one hour for that job. Usually takes only half that time though.

A 1 hr min is reasonable.

2. 3 hr @ $105 hr is robbery.

It's his business and he's free to run it as he sees fit. Saying that I wouldnt expect repeat customers unless theyre really stoopid. :-laf

The oil sender from NAPA is about $30, I paid $25 a couple of years ago. I changed it with a long wrench from underneath. I had broken my sender off when I reinstalled my vacuum and power steering pumps. It took less than an hour.

I'm not a mechanic by trade either, and I don't support that behavior. But I bet what I said isn't too far off the mark.

And there are plenty of good mechanics/shops/parts desk guys out there, just gotta look a little harder to find them sometimes. In this particular case, the OP was not in a favorable situation (on the road and long way from home), so it seems.

All you can hope for is that they tested properly to insure there isn't an oiling problem and did replace the sensor. As long as they performed, the $$$ will come and the $$$ will go. What really kicks you in the nuts is when they bang you for the repair and then do a half @$$ job along the way.

Surfbeetle, that would be the oil pressure sender. The fuel sender is in the tank.

You know, I wrote fuel but meant oil... Oh I did the fuel sender too, that was a pain compared to the oil sender... I'm going to edit my above post and change fuel to oil.

Had my truck towed to a small Dealership Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee NO! NO ! I WONT GO THERE :-laf LEAVE IT ALONE! LEAVE IT ALONE

Last time I had something I didnt want to do, I called around and the guy that gave me the "book time" actually was the one I picked.

Probably because he gave me an actual price.

If they already know what theyre going to charge you, why not just say it!:D

I think its because book time is probably the least amount they will charge, if there is a complication and they could charge you more, then I think they will.
