I reckon they put the "C" in "C"annern(Cannon):-laf!
Read a story about a feller huntin' hogs in North Carolina. He was using a Sharps(Replica) with handloads and cast bullets. The hunter was being guided by a local. The guide referred to the "Man with the Cannern" when he hit a hog that was in a wallow. He shot clean through the Hog, killing it and "blowed the water plumb out of the bog", with the "Cannern":-laf! If you are from the Appalachians(I am;)), you understand the "local color" of the language:D!
BIG, That sounds like a top of the line, Bear Buster! Can you handle the recoil?
In reality, for a followup shot you need to recover quickly.
If not, handload some 400's at around 1600-1800 FPS. Still an handful, but more control if you need a backup shot.
Have you shot it for groups? Accuracy? What do you think of the carbine, so far? GregH

Top of the line BEAR BUSTER for sure ! At the house I have my make shift range. I have made these metal gong's to shoot at. They are 1/2 inch thick plate steel . I have one at 300/ 500/ 650 yards I took the tractor to get the 300 yard one and put it at 100yrd. These plate targets are so heavy that it took Jason my Nephew and I to put it in the bucket of the tractor. They are built on a swing type so I never have to walk down to reset the target it swings back into position. I had some Remington ammo and had the gun sighted in with that for groups. DEAD ON AT 100 as this is not for anything but DEFENCE. Before moving the target the Wife shot her 300 win she thought that 0 was off and its dead on at 300. The gong moved when the 180 gr slug hit it but being so heavy the gong just moved and came back into center. After the move to 100 yards she again shot it with her 300 and the zero moved as figured so she was happy with that. I asked her if she was thru playing with her BB gun :-laf I pulled out the Marlin and open the box the wife Had not really noticed the size of the round in camp. She said My God Gail !!!!What is that for killing Rhino's or something do you always have to be the one that has the biggest (I just left that one alone) :-laf I put the round in and pulled the trigger. NOT ONLY DID THE GONG SPIN BUT IT FLIPED IT BACK AND ROLLED THE GONG STAND AND ALL :-laf:-laf, Greg her eye's were as big as dinner plates and she said if you need me to shoot that to save you YOUR DEAD!!!!! I asked Jason if he'd like to take a shot or two he said that he had a date tonite and that he would like to hug his girl with both arms. :-laf Greg for the first time in quite a while IM ARMED AND ALMOST AS DANGEROUS as Mr bear. Jason asked if I was going to shoot with the new ammo for groups because the 0 may have changed I said IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH DONT YA THINK. :D It's NOT a gun for the recoil shy I WANT TO TRY SOME OF THE 500 gr SLUGS. Thank's Greg I think :-laf

Here in North Carolina I use a 350 Remington magnum and a 35 Whelen for black bears and whitetails. I have never shot a 45/70. I plan to tow the RV to Penrose, CO. to stay a friends for a couple months in January to look around for an elk hunt next year.

Never had any experience with the 350 Rem. or the Whelen. As for the 45/70 I always thought of it as one of those old used up rounds UNTILL NOW. Elk aren't real hard to kill shot placement is everything of course. FOR ME I think that the 30/06 is the min. I know I will get some come backs on that but like I said FOR ME. My daughter shot an Elk this year with my first hunting rifle Rem 721 in 06 and it dropped as fast as one hit with the 338/378 it just has range limits

BIG! Sounds like the real deal! I dont believe you'll need the 500's:-laf! 'Course, if you just cant get enough of bein' beat up? Its ALL GOOD:DOo. !

Just practice with the lighter loads so the process is instinctive! Make sure you pad yer shoulders good:-laf! Shoot it left and right handed. In case you loose your strong side capability! Your Wife is a WISE WOMAN:D! Sounds like your Nephew is smart, also:D!

Makes a 12 Ga. with slugs look like a pellet gun;), dont itOo. ? GregH

PS. Gotta tell you a story on the Ruger #1, . 45/70;

Many years ago, I did some load development using the 400 Gr. Barnes semi-spitzer. It is an absolute MONSTER! Suprisingly accurate and just about as light a rifle as you would want to pack around. However, that rifle, in . 45/70, recoils like a 105MM Howitzer!!!

Upon returning from a session at the rifle range. I had to stop by a good Friends house to show him the Rifle and the loads. He lived in an unincorporated part of the Canyon, so he said, "Can I shoot it"? Now you have to understand. This man is in a wheel chair, paralyzed from the chest on down! He is former Navy and a fellow firearms enthusiast.

Bill rolled himself out on his back deck and locked his brakes on his chair. I went out by the edge of his property and tacked a target to a 18" diameter Ponderosa Pine about 30 yards from the deck. Bill loaded the round and set himself as steady as possible and fired. Things happened. Rocks flew from the hillside behind the tree and the recoil almost rolled Bill over backwards:--). His front tires, near his feet, came plum off the deck, where, had he not caught himself and lunged forward. He would have been flat on his back with a knot on his head:{! That round hit the target square on and completely penetrated that tree!

CUMMINZ, The Elk will be herded up and the bulls will have shed their antlers, in January. They wont act the same as during and directly after rut. It is a good experience, however. If you havent been here before. 2 things. Exercise! High altitude will eat your lunch if you are not prepared. Your rifle zero in North Carolina will no longer be zeroed in Colorado. Find a range and recheck the zero. Best, is a range that is similar in Altitude to where you will hunt.

Keep in touch! GregH

Taylor KO values

BIG, What is really interesting about this is the load you are firing in your carbine develops KE similar to a . 30/06. With the . 45/70, the KE is delivered more efficiently by the larger diameter bullet.

There are several numbering systems such as "Taylor Knockout Values" that explain why your steel plate and frame were knocked over by the Garrett loads and only "tickled" by your Wifes . 300 Magnum(even though the . 300 Magnum carries 800 FT Lbs of energy higher than that of the . 45/70 load)!

Heres the equation. It is not an absolute. It is only one way of measuring(defining) the efficiency of energy transfer to a game animal. GregH

Mr Cumminz Greg is telling you some VERY important tips. I have got to see more hunting this year than I ever have and the being in shape is the most important thing. You dont have to run marathons or be super human. But it is really good if you can walk for a few miles and still shoot. The mountains will take your breath away in more way's than scenery. A bunch of the folks that hunt think that the horse's will do all the work and they do a bunch of it. But they can still only get you so far and then it's all on your leg's. And then ya have to figure how to get the mule's in to get your game.
