Hello everyone! This will be my first time working on a hpcr truck problem as a lot of my work is 12 valve with p pumps.

My boss's wife has a 2003 hpcr that now doesn't run. She went out in the morning to start and warm up, the engine just turns over and refuses to start. The truck has around 500,000 kms on the odometer.

I've only worked with my boss for almost 3 weeks and just getting to know all of his family members' trucks which are all dodges with cummins as well.

For a long time that they've owned the truck, the engine misses when idling for a while. 3 injectors have been changed already.

Now it doesn't even run. The engine just cranks and cranks until batteries start losing power.

Any suggestions would be of great help when I go to look at it tomorrow.

If more info is needed, I'll be happy to answer. Thanks

Shawn

DO not keep cranking... if it don't start in 5-8 seconds stop cranking. . I will walk you through some steps to finalize the problem,But you will need to call Me. Otherwise try all the recommended postings then call. either way its your choice.

Start with the easy stuff. Make sure the lift pump is running and has sufficient pressure. I've had a couple HPCR's that one had a bad lift pump and one with a bad power supply wire to the lift pump.

Borrowed a shop scanner. Came up code po336 for crankshaft sensor.

Truck is in shop and has been warmed up. It now runs. Can crank sensor act stupid in the cold?

If you wan't to verify the sensors really bad, you can swap it with the cam sensor (same part) and see if that code comes up.
BTW, it's not running the TST PowerMax is it? The TST always liked to throw code 0336 on my 03.

NOT likely. . The CMP provides a signal to the Engine

Control Module (ECM) at all times when the engine

is running. The ECM uses the CMP information primarily

on engine start-up. Once the engine is running,

the ECM uses the CMP as a backup sensor for

engine speed. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)

is the primary engine speed indicator for the engine

after the engine is running.

I'm a little rusty, what does cmp mean? What do you think is going on here? This is the second time it has happened and both times it was cold outside and the truck was warmed up in the shop. It just fires up as if nothing happened.

Call an ask... .

I don't mean to sound simple here, but I tend to agree with the injector/high pressure pump theory. Its been running rough lately, doesn't start when cold, but starts up when warm... cold temps usually mean slower cranking speeds, and if injectors or pump are borderline, they may not be building enough psi to light.
It'll be interesting to find out what the real cause is, from an experienced peson, so we can all learn.

Its so hard to walk someone through the Next steps VIA typing. to verify injectors,if he calls... within minutes he will know in most cases.

TcDiesel: Yeah it's hard to type everything. Right now we're trying the crank sensor according to scanner. We got a new one in. If the truck still acts up, we have your number as after this, it can get very expensive so we will need your guidance then. I hope I'm not making you wait by the phone or computer.

When sensor went in, the engine light went out on it's own. We hope this is it.

I don't own the truck but the lady who does, is preparing to give it the boot if injectors or cp3 pump fails. She's pretty fed up with it, costing money. Her last truck was a 1998 12v and her daughter drives it now. That truck is still going with over 750,000 kms on the odometer. The lady uses her truck for work, hauling whatever. She thought the 1998 was getting tired so she got the 2003. She wants her 12v back, but her daughter says no.

So they're gonna do shopping for 2 more 12v trucks sometime.

CR are good trucks Cummins / D-Max , operator friendly powerful and clean, most get good mileage, the down side is maintenance and repairs. I will never go back to 12/24 valve motors . . loud and sink up Garage or Shop, not even close to the power. What generally happens when buying used "You are buying someone Problems". Good practice is to figure $ 3/4 in repairs when buying used.

TCDIESEL: Yeah the CR trucks are very good, especially with EFIlive programming now available for them.

We still prefer the p-pumps for their long life, low maintenance cost. We put many k's on these trucks that we have.

I have nearly 500,000kms on my 1997 with everything near original.

My boss's family all drive dodges too. The wife has the 2003 with nearly 500,000kms, my boss's 1999 24v with 600,000kms, their 2 daughters each with a 1998 12v p-pumps with 450,000kms and 750,000kms for the other.

They really love their 12v p-pumped trucks. The wife is fed up with her 2003. My boss is not happy with his 1999 24v as it needs a vp44 pump again even though the last pump is only a year old.

A lot of my friend's 1994-1998 12v's are running very well with most having over 400,000k's.

For many people, it's the feeling they get when their trucks are in the shop for expensive and lengthly timed repairs. After so much time and money spent, they get sick of CR's a lot more or they trade or sell them sooner before big problems happens.

I know one guy with a duramax. In three years, he spent $50,000 on it, including $20,000 he paid to buy it. (several problems also not related to dodges)

Me, $15,000 in 3 years as well, including buying the truck, swap over to manual, dana 80 with disc, and making my truck much much better.

This is just our own opinion and preference.
