2002 dodge with 316K miles. I had a brake job and shortly after when i travel less than 5 MPH and brake the brake peddle is hard and does not depress. it sometimes takes releasing and pumping for the brakes to function again until the low speeds. Local shop replaced the power steering pump and now says it is the brake hydraulic unit. any other ideas? Thanks:{

I would find another shop for one thing. It sounds like they screwed up the job and now are throwing parts at it at your expense. If they bled the brakes the old fashioned way by pumping the pedal, but didn't limit pedal travel to keep it from going all the way to the floor, they very well might have messed up the master cylinder.

I asked and they said that when they replaced pads/rotor and sand blasted the parts they did not break the hydraulic line. Does this make sense? thanks Bob

From the sounds of it they did not replace your calipers, hence "breaking" the hydraulic lines loose.

I'm curious how the pushed the piston back into the caliper. Did they just force the fluid back to the MC with a clamp, or release the pressure at the bleed screw on the calipers? I'm still saying this is a shop induced problem.

What was the initial reason you took it in the shop? Were you having problems before you took it in or did it just need pads and rotors?

Yes i was have a pulsation in the brakes, almost like a bad ABS but that was replaced last year. I did need new rotors and pads as 130K on those were pretty good. I only question the replacement of the power steering pump but i was told that the "book" suggested that it be replaced with the booster. Bob
