I have a 2016 Ram 3500 dually on order with the tow package puck system and thinking about getting the Curt Q24 5th wheel hitch. I pull a 2013 Montana 3725RL, it has a 14,000 lb. Max load rating (I have not weighted mine yet to find actual weight).

What do you guys think about the Curt hitch?

Thanks, Scott

Seriously compare them side by side. I have never heard anyone say I liked the Curt better but sure have heard people say they liked the B&W better!

Best non air ride hitch out there!

I think the B&W pictured in Cummins12V98's post is the best way to go with the puck system. If you already have a 5er hitch you like then keep it and get a picture frame adapter.

Yes, the 1st hitches were/are only rated for 18K but many RVers go over that. The upper head unit is way over built and the jaws are massive next to a competitor that is rated a lot higher. I was able to tour the plant in Kansas, they are quality first minded.

I was towing 20K with my 18K Companion. I was not worried at all since they admit to being rated for much less than they are tested to.

I briefly towed for hire, and the company I towed for required a 22K rated 5th wheel hitch. When I showed up for vehicle inspection, he stated the B&W companion is under rated and he OK'd it.

They are all under-rated. Unagoose (gooseneck only, they don't make a 5th companion) is rated to 40,000#. But tested to 60,000#

The puck system base is likely tested to more than the towing capacity of the 5500's.

Love these type of threads.
Used the B&W turnover in my 99 CTD. Never had one ounce of problem out of it. New to me 2013 dodge 3500 came with the B&W turnover. I will be purchasing the 3500 or 3600 companion not sure yet which one! Still doing research. I love how some of us will spend 60K plus on a new best truck on the market and then squabble over saving a few dollars on something like a hitch. I have never heard about or seen a B&W hitch fail . However I have seen first hand both curt and Reese hitches fail. When I purchased my Chevy D/A it came with a curt mounted in the bed have only used It 3 times and the trailer I pull with it is #5000 below the hitch max weight rating. Thank goodness for that,. B&W all the way!

The factory Prep hitch is the best option, You order and its done, it comes with FCA Warranty/Liability and its done. The Ball hardware is solid and the 4 point hitch is ready to go. order it and be done with it.

Its just preference for the add-ons... But GN is still much better then any 5th, who wants all that extra hardware and cost 5ths create. I have 7 different construction Trailers not including the 1 pictured. GN all the way. America is so fooled thinking that 5ths are the ticket, maybe owners that want 5ths have never had GN if they did I doubt they would ever return back to 5ths. I understand that some TTs needs 5ths but I wouldn't buy 1 that requires it.

I agree with what you say.. I have 2 fifthwheel trailers in Alaska. I don't want the hitch in the bed but I would then have to convert 2 fifthwheel to goosenecks... Could you recommend the best system to convert fifth wheels???

Thanks
Chris

Would just seem to me that a fiver to gooseneck conversion would put more stress on the frame of the trailer. Fifth wheel trailers typically aren't built with as substantial of a structure as the typical gooseneck. Adding that beef to the hitch side of things is easy, though bulky. I agree that I prefer a GN for heavy duty equipment hauling purposes, but the traditional fiver offers up the space for the front bedroom. This additional space is why the front isn't as strong as a GN.

Check out the Goose Box how is that going to add stress. Someone should show ( proof ) that the GN has cause damage or adds added stress. I want proof, than I will stand corrected. the 5ths are promoted snake oil, Grocery sellers.

Rather than presenting a structural analysis demonstrating the increase in torque applied to the 5th wheel frame by a gooseneck adapter (including the Goose Box), I'll simply point you to the caution statement used by a manufacturer of gooseneck adapters:

A word of caution is in order about the use of the Cody Coupler! Because of its design, additional pressure may be placed on the "King Pin" of the trailer it is mounted on. This is a result of the leveraging action involved. Because of this, we feel it is wise to mention several steps that should be taken by the owner of such a rig. These are "common sense" suggestions that could and should apply to any type of trailer hook-up.

REGULARLY INSPECT THE INSTALLATION OF THE COUPLER
Make certain the "King Pin" is securely attached to the Pin Box. Occasionally, additional reinforcement might be advisable.

AVOID THE "POP-A-WHEELY SYNDROME"
Smooth, even starts and stops are always better than the jerky motion.

TRAILER BRAKES SHOULD ALWAYS BE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER!
And properly hooked up.

Crudely worded, but it gets the point across.

Goose box is the only one that I am aware of that doesn't void the trailer warranty.

Might make sense to get an extended warranty tho

That's a marketing decision, not a technical one. Lippert is betting that they can make more money selling the Reese Goose Box than they will pay out in warranty expenses. See HERE.
