Has anyone changed the fuel filter (not water separator) every other change out, due to the water separator keeping the primary filter clean?

That's a good plan. But since I only drive 8500-8700 miles per year, I just do it once a year

I have to agree with Joseph Donnely, now that I know the filter is a finer filter than the water separator. I also wathed a You-Tube video after I posted the question, and in the video they compared the two side by side, and there is a difference.

Changed filters on Sat this weekend and after on Sunday morning started truck and it died, restarted and ran fine, drove it 40 miles and parked it. This morning (Tues) it did the same. I checked for leaks, and sure enough I have seepage on the front filter, it isn't much but I guess it's enough to leak air over night. I oiled o ring and I believe I got it tight enough. Is it usual to have an o ring bind up, and will I need to replace it?

The o-ring does have a tendency to move when tightening. Make sure it's seated without any bends in it and it's perfectly straight I accidentally ran the thread cover over it when tightening

I did the same thing. I've actually found that if the o-ring isn't lubricated enough, it tends to move a bit more when tightening. I get it where it is nearly dripping wet with oil before starting to tighten them down now. No idea if this is ideal, but it does work for me.

I do likewise. I even put a little oil all the way around the cap. Not sure if there's a difference, but seems like I've had better luck with the black o-rings that some filters have versus the lighter color (gray???) o-rings.

Another thing.....to ensure I get the cap started without cross-threading, I'll turn it counter clockwise a bit until I "feel" the cap drop onto the proper threads, then tighten down.

I don't see the rear spin on filter on my 2012 truck..... I think I heard that the first filter (by the rear diff) is new for 2013-on. Anybody confirm that or should I keep looking? LOL.....

Ok, I totally understand 15,000 mile intervals for fuel filter change.

But I find it weird that they doubled the number of filters, but didn't increase the interval.

I'm planning on changing the back chasis spin on every summer. But changing the front one every other year.

I only put 8500 miles on per year.

I'm one week from my 2 year anniversary with the truck. And @ 16,850 miles. I remember having about 8500 miles this time last year.

However, on a side note, I notice my liability insurance coverage, collision, & comprehensive insurance coverage with $1000 deductible has been costing me 25 cents per mile. Do any of you know why insuarance on these trucks is so much? Is it because of towing accidents? Or safety recalls?

I've towed less than 5000 miles of the 17,000 that I have put on the truck.

I actually change the fuel filter every other oil change. It only takes about 15 minutes. I figure for the cost of the filter, it's cheap insurance.

My truck is a 2012, however, which means I have only one filter to deal with.....

Following up on my issue, I found the 0 ring OK and the seepage had stopped. Probably fuel spilled in the changing of a filter by a rookie fuel filter changer. I oiled the 0 ring with a "Zoom Spout Oil bottle" that has a long small diameter tube that I can apply oil only to the 0 ring in place and spin the 0 ring as I oil it, BTW I changed the 10 weight oil with synthetic motor oil.

Cummins / RAM has really gotten serious about fuel filtration......it's all about filtering quality.......and not as much about filtering quantity.

Why would you want to roll the dice regarding a possible denial of warranty claim on anything fuel related by skimping on a $63 filter??? Makes absolutely ZERO sense to me......but hey.....it's your rig / your warranty.

Drive more miles.......and your cost per mile will go down. :-laf

Drive more miles? Wish I could. Would love to take a trip to the Rockies, Yellowstone, and the black hills. Then head on up to Alaska.

Love driving my rig.

Well, I changed insurance companies and got it down to 16 cents per mile

Changing the back filter every 8500 miles and the front filter every 15K won't void the warrantee. I think I'll do that.

By the way, it wasn't my idea to wait on the front filter. Got that idea from someone else on here.
