OK, so bought new truck from Dave Smith. 200miles later throws two DEF codes common with the 2013 issues. Two dealers on the way back home reset but dont know what to say. Local dealer tells me today with 1600miles that the CAT needs to be replaced after speaking with Dodge and that another new truck like mine has the same issue. Either the dealer is lying and it is bad DEF or the CAT is really defective out of the factory. Told by manager that historically a spray lubricant used during assembly was causing the issues with the CAT and that since the 2016/17 have a new design that perhaps this is still happening as the issue. REALLY! Is this the level of QC we can expect on 70K trucks these days. I guess we will see as this story evolves. My other suspicion is that they are putting crap parts in the trucks at the factory knowing they will need to be replaced. If this ends up being a new trend with Dodge they will loose a lot of customers. Even my wife said, "are you sure you bought the right truck".. Ouch

No codes on my '16 after 19,000 miles and 10 months. My U-Connect 8.4 Nav has been pretty entertaining in the number of ways it has caused problems but even that seems to be working pretty well these days.
I'd give them a chance to make the repair and see how it turns out.
Even with the Nav system issues we have had, I love the truck.
You should be fine.
Bruce

No problems with my 2016 thus far. Certainly nothing insofar as either the DEF system or uConnect 8.4 system.

My 2013 SRW was one of the 1st SRWs build on the day SRW started being built, DRW were out about 5 months earlier, NOT 1 code in 45 months of ownership ...... What Puzzles Me is owners buying form what I would a consider Grocery seller and cannot figure why other Dealers have NO time for issue's on there truck, they may have plenty of buying customers that don't grocery buy.

I understand some Dealer Sales are more $ ,but when Grocery Buying Don't expect service depts to put rush on you problems. If you grocery Buy its next to impossible to enforce Lemon laws in the extreme rare case it happens.

Had far worse with my 6.7 Powerstroke. I'll take a few check engine lights over engines every other month.

With the multitude of DEF threads I was concerned a little about driving 1200 miles home from Dave Smith's in a freaking blizzard 90% of the way but now with 4900 on the odo in 6 weeks so far nothing at all. In fact just added 2.5 gallons of def the other day to it. Didn't fill it but took it to about 3/4 tank so what about 900 miles per gallon of def though 85ish% highway and no towing just yet but won't be long. Hoping it stays that way, no codes that is. My 01 I sold with 350k on it and it never left me stranded hoping this one does as well.

A truly defective part usually fails early in its life. Go get it repaired when you get home and move on.

Just wondering why you would think they would build with inferior parts so they can pay the dealer to replace it in the field? What's to gain?

I agree. I have had some very early failures on new vehicles. Usually i take it back to the dealer a month or so later with a small punch list of issues.
In economics we learned that companies sometimes go low bid. They know the failure percentage out of the box will be higher. This leads to higher in the field repair costs. But, the savings up front with the lower price from the vender more than justifies their move. However, i do not think they take into account the hit to their reputation.
I want a perfect truck built with all the best parts. Having said that my budget would not allow me to purchase a truck built to those standards 100% of the time.

Isn't it wonderful, and helpful, when we get replies like , " No problems with my 2016 thus far " Lots of help there

Pretty sure mine is headed for the SCR replacement so far have had two DEF issues. There is a recall on certain years on the 2500 for the SCR replacement, and I am sure the 3500's will be included eventually. Supposedly the SCR has been upgraded on the newer trucks. Good luck on your repair

There ordering and replacing CAT... The vehicle is NOT equipped with a CAT...No help there either...literally 100s of reasons for codes, What I find common with codes is driving style, Owners dart drive this creates many communication errors on 1 trip codes.

Drive a Bluetech Diesel Motor Like gas and you will have SCR/DEF codes , ease into the power band and most SCR/DEF codes will disappear or never trip, The CEL lights when indicated to do so, once lit it has no way of turning off until conditions are met or turned off form device/Scanner.

That smells fishy...

SCR= Selective CATAL\YST Reduction.[/QUOTE

The term CAT was out Decades before SCR Selective catalytic reduction < Cat Catalytic converter ,the Chemistry is entirely different and When YOU have a License Dealer telling customers/Owners CAT its really FUBAR (Knowledge dept) in any Ram Cummins 2013+.

2004.5 -2012 Dodge/ Ram Cummins had CATs

The point is, it is still a CAT. A catalytic converter is a generic term for a device that converts emissions into something less toxic....or damaging by using various types of ceramic/metal compounds. They all work on similar principles, but obviously use different materials to address different pollutants.

There is nothing wrong with a dealer calling an SCR Catalyst a "CAT" because, that is exactly what it is.

My 2003 3500 was a SRW, so no you don't have the first.

Sorry, should have probably said SCR but I just moved up from an 03 which has non of this junk to a 2017 limited longhorn, aisin, etc and I don't know why my profile isn't showing
