I purchased a water pump online, it's suppose to be Cummins OE part#2881804 for 6.7 Cummins. It has a plastic impeller. Does anyone recognize this pump as a Cummins OE part? I didn't expect to see any plastic.
Thanks

Online form Who? Is its one of the big Grocery sellers who knows , We find China Junk in OE Boxes all the time...The down level of selling on line is bottomless. In many areas.

Dieseltruckpartsdirect.com out of Fairfield California is where I purchased it. Have you seen any Cummins water pumps with plastic impeller?

Does the pump have "Concentric" stamped in it??? Made in India??? The latest Cummins pumps are that brand.

Provide your VIN or ESN and I'll verify....

MWilson, I'll have to look at it again. I only saw numbers when I looked at it yesterday. I'll pm you my Vin. Thank you Sir

I just checked the shelves, I keep a 2881688 for my rear gear train "B" series. That one has a cast impeller and is made by "Corcentric" for Cummins.

Yes is the simple answer.Sadly even the Cummins supplied pumps are not what they used to be.

I figured so, Thanks Bob. Would you advise to put the pump in with the plastic impeller or should I get a different pump with the cast impeller. Currently my original pump is fine at 93K but I'm doing a coolant change and figured I should go ahead and change it out now. Thanks

Well, this is interesting. Even the Gates equivalent has a plastic impeller.

Two of us working on it now.....we just went back and retrieved the 2881688 off of the shelf.....upon closer inspection the impeller that appeared to be cast is in reality "Plastic"......

Am now reaching out to Cummins to see if there is a water pump with a metal impeller that will replace the 2881804.

Cummins may feel that the plastic is a better option...broken impeller fins loose in the cooling system would be a lot less worrisome if they are plastic.....

I have two on the shelf here. One from April 2016 and one from August 2016. Both are as Mike described. At first glance I thought the impeller might be plastic but I believe it's cast with a black finish. It "dings" when I tap it with the back of my knife blade.

There have been members swapping the worn out stock pump for a pump with plastic impellers or to simply have a spare on hand. Many times these plastic impellers were in pieces in the box. If i remember correctly Brockman was one who found such damage. Is the plastic to resist corrosion of coolant or such? I for one will like a pump without plastic which is prone to shipping breakage.

Scott, we thought the same thing until I whacked it with my thumbnail.....it fooled me until we put it on the counter...

I tapped mine with the back of my knife and it "dings". Let me see if I can trim a bit off one edge.

We don't really have many options. The plastic is here to stay.I understand your dilemma.I would like to replace mine in the 05 but that oem may be better than any available replacement.

Well Sleeper1, you've got both Scott and I scratching and digging here.....:D

I'm going to call in a favor from my Cummins parts manager buddy. I am going to have him pull a 2881804 and a 2881805 which fits my '06. That still appears to have a steel impeller. He will do a side by side for me comparing weep hole, bolt pattern, impeller direction, etc....Let's see what that gives us....the only thing that may go wrong is if he does not have both on hand...

Edit...I just checked his stock and he has both on hand.....will report our findings...

OK. Bob and others are correct. After extensive scientific testing and consulting with four highly skilled technicians and my shop foreman, we have concluded that it is, indeed, plastic or some form of composite. I trimmed the sharp edge off the base of the impeller on opposite sides enough to remove any "coating" if there was any and checked for continuity and it has none. One tech said it tastes like plastic (As I said, they're highly skilled) and another said it did not stick to his aluminum magnet.

I'll give it this, it sure is some hard stuff. I'm going to see if I can get someone at Concentric and see if they can tell me what it is.

All, That's why I like this site. Thanks to all for the brain storming. I have a few days before I need to make my decision. I feel if the plastic were to break it would be way less internal damage, but I don't want either plastic or cast in my coolant system. Thanks again
