The G56: What is the size of the tool needed ...

...for the drain and fill plugs? Anyone know?

By the way, has anyone here installed any of the manual transmission coolers offered by Geno's that utilize the PTO openings? If so, how do you like it/them?

When using those, is there a provision to install and temperature gauge probe or is there already a location on the G56 for one?

Now in MT on the way to ID before heading back east.

I couldn't buy just the 14 mm Allen wrench at my parts store to drain the fluid. So I bought a whole set.

I did install the fast coolers, but don't know if they are better than the others. There are 2 plugs (bolt type) in the cooler to put a ten sensor and whatever else you want. But i didn't do that.

However, I put them on with the 43 pounds of torque that are recommended for the PTO covers. The 12 lbs of torque in the instructions just sounded wrong.

The reason I don't know if the fast coolers are better than the trans coolers is. ...... I just installed them 2 weeks ago and haven't done any towing

Nice coolers Newsa. Did you get the site glass covers or standard? How are they holding up? Any leaks or seeping? I've been eyeballing those and the Trans Cool units over at Genos for bit.

No sight glass. They are holding up nice. No.leakage.

I used anaerobic sealant. Good stuff!

Save the PTO covers. They go on the outside. And you will need to buy the G56 bolts (It's a kit)

The G56 bolts are a bit larger than the nv5600 bolts (Diameter)

Just want to make one last comment of advice.

Regarding a sight glass......

Not sure if there is one. The bolts/holes in the coolers from my observation would not be a place to install a,sight glass. And adding lube to the fill hole is recommended. Then, put the plug in the fill hole and add an extra quart through the shifter hole (after removing the 4 bolts from the shift lever base.).

It is reported that an extra quart lives the main bearing better.

So adding a sight glass might not be worth it, (again, not sure if one exists..... But if it did, would not be in the coolers.... would be in the fill plug). And if the fluid is above the fill plug, not sure a sight glass is recommended.

These are what I bought from Genos. They are of good quality and fit perfect, however I don't know if they cooled my trans any better than stock. However I did install a cooler with pump that works great and it keeps my transmission at 170*, utilizing the Fast Coolers.

Be aware that those won't fit on 07.5 and up on the passenger side due to exhaust clearance. I shaved mine to fit.

I looked very close and see I have almost 6" of clearance on both sides. Can you tell me about your cooler and pump system? I'd like to do something like that as well.

I did a pretty elaborate cooler set up. Pump is on one thermostat and then the fans come on on another thermostat. Haven't had a long mountain pull yet over 30K GVW but temps went from 240*+ as low as 24k gvw on level ground at highway speed to as cool as i want to run it. Pump only will maintain 190* loaded at 24k gvw level ground and the fans will cool it even more from there.

Personally I try to run it around 190* because everything it's bolted to is at or around that temp. Water runs near 200, engine oil is near 200.... The big aluminum G56 heat sink would be pulling heat off the motor if I tried running it any cooler. I'd just rather have everything about the same. Now, that being said, when grossing really high on anything other than level ground, I'll probably run it as cool as a I can because of case separation. I wouldn't imagine much case flex happening at steady speed on level ground even loaded heavy but when the skinny peddle is really leaned in to, I'd prefer the trans to be as cools as possible when heavy.

Here is my setup. I tapped them with 1/2" NPT into the fast coolers, for the oil lines. If you look at the right side, you'll see how close the exhaust pipe is, and I rapped it to help prevent heat transfer, as well as shaving down the fast cooler to fit.
