After struggling to get thru this post, and skipping thru some of it I've got one question and one opinion...
If running 3.42 and 4.10 side by side pulling the same weight and getting basically the same MPG, why wouldnt you pick the 4.10's. Only advantage I see with 3.42 is if you run empty a lot.

My opinion on the idea of running the 3.42 in 5th is like a 4.10 in 6th is like comparing apples to oranges...yes they run the same RPM but theres more to it than RPM. Put them side by side set up that way pulling the same load at the same speed and mash the throttle and see which one pulls away.

Don't forget that the 3.42 is running in 5th gear at a .77 OD ratio while the 4.10 is running in 6th gear at a .63 OD ratio, which offsets the 4.10 difference to the 3.42. As I posted earlier the final gear ratio is similar between the two.

0.63 4.1 2.583
0.77 3.42 2.6334

Smaller diameter tires on the dually vs SRW will even it out. If they are both duallies the 3.42 truck has a bit lower final gear ratio and a slight advantage.

Seems like someone failed to plan.....or planned to fail.
She could have been one of the I-can-do-anything-a-man-can-do types and figured out that she wasn't as tough a man as she thought! Probably, though, she could just be the contact for husband, father, brother, significant other, or bank/repo agent---who knows. Hopefully not for sale because of injury--to me, that is a dangerous way to make a living! Unforeseen stuff happens.

Maybe this thread wasn't the most important TDR thread ever. But there are other threads/postings that really sort of helped me dodge a serious bullet. Threads about the rear fuel filter heater not being activated at the factory, threads about TSB's I wouldn't have known about, advice about how to keep my improperly treated Florida fuel from gelling on me when driving north in winter, info about batteries /tires, etc. And a few very nifty pieces of advise about how to turn off my seatbelt chime, and how to turn my console keyed 12V charger/outlet to full on with the battery (works in key off positiom). As well as warranty advise (extended and fed emissions)

Other threads are just fun to weigh in on and disagree on. Gearing of the rear differential is NOT the most important thread. The load tables provided by RAM are adequate for anyone who is purchasing. I don't think anyone maliciously posted wrong info in their opinions in this thread.

I believe there are experts with experience behind their wisdom on here. And even the expert's will have differing opinions. Just like doctors might give different diagnoses and lawyers can have different advise to clients.
It was an entertaining thread. And fun to weigh in with an opinion.....even if it wasn't well received.

Yes, fill in your signature. We know you have 4:10's and a 68RFE. And your parents named you after a Detroit Diesel 2 cycle.

why do I need to fill in my signature. do we compare toys around here?

Not comparing toys or equipment. You Don't have to.... But it is the etiquette of the group.

I have a tradesman with a g56. I have the cheapest/most basic CTD on the 4th gen site.

I've been told to "shut up and get an Aisin ". But I love my truck too much.

Its a tool for other members to see when questions are asked. I like members to see my truck and toys as well. It paid off for me when I was thinking of buying a Arctic Fox 5ver, a member I was blogging with here, had one in his signature and I asked about them. To see the answer I got look at my sig. You don't need to fill it out, but it will help other members when your asking questions.

mines pretty basic too. but then again everybody on this forum has a Ram w/Cummins. pretty much everything else is just fluff. it isn't like having carpeting or leather seats makes the truck more powerful. LOL

most buy what they need. If you like your Truck dont let anyone tell you otherwise!. One of my favorite trucks had no carpet, no piwer windows, a granny gear stick. Only power steering and breaks. Wish i still had it..
Now, we travel alot and the 'fluff stuff" is nice to have. I gave up on stick trannys because i have had left knee surgery. We do love the truck we have now, but its job it pulling a large fifth wheel and getting us 'there" comfortably... YOU DONT NEED AN AISIN IF WHAT you have works fine...enjoy life!, live it up a little.....

it isn't like you are one of the people on this forum who has an opinion I actually care to read or ask for advice.. :)

If you look at the top right of each person's post there is Join Date: and Post: number.

These are a fairly good indication about how long a member has been around the forum.

From time to time we get newbies that seem to have an attitude.

Post count and join date have nothing to do with the quality of ones posts.

There's plenty of people here who seem to like listening to themselves talk.

Congratulations, you just confirmed my point!
Plenty of "old timers" here that do it as well.

Some people get downright "cult-like" in their beliefs and opinions about these trucks. What works for me may not work for the next guy... doesn't make me right or wrong. That's why they're called "options". You can tailor anything to suit your individual needs.

My favorite "truck" :)

OK OK, not really a truck but she shore' do ride like one, and that worn out 3 speed makes you work for a clean shift every time.... no power steering either :D

I don't know the ins and outs of hot shotting, but I do like the way my truck pulls and handles. The 4.44s give me ~2000 RPMs @ 70mph running empty and plenty of power towing 20.2K lbs. My criteria in picking truck was biggest brakes, Cummins, and stout transmission (Aisin). I see a lot of Ram 4500/5500 C&Cs hotshotting, but also see a bunch of Ram 3500 dually HDs. My brother in law keeps trying to talk me into contracting with company he works for to haul generators, but I'm retired and not interested. Would have to be on call 24/7 to haul replacement and failed generators in TX. I see 11mpg empty and see ~8mpg pulling. GCW 32.4K. Ron

Nice to come on a great forum and have an attitude right from the beginning. Your join Jan 2018, mine 2001.

It's a two way street around here. People willing to spend their time to help but when all there is is an attitude that does not make for a great forum. I hear the Cummins Forum is more your style!

I really doubt that. My son hauled this out of Phoenix to Showlow via Salt River Canyon Saturday, with his '16 Mega dually and 3.73's. He said it was 2nd and 3rd gear all the way down and up. He thinks it might be over his registration so he might have to unload some before he heads to Montana with it or buy more. He said he will weigh it before he leaves then decide what is best. The next load will be smaller with a smaller trailer, so he can unload some short stuff if he has to.

Well my son finally found time to haul this to Montana, it weighed in at 34,500 so he added the other load to it, 5300 lbs. of tin, for a total of 39,800, right on Rams GCW rating. I asked him to keep me advised of how the truck does. Should be interesting.
