I just changed the oil at 6000 miles boy was it dirty! My 03 never dirtied the oil that bad until I put a programmer on it. Even then I don't think it was that bad.

Please fill in your public signature. Kinda hard to tell what truck you are referring to???

Honestly there is no way to tell the condition of your oil unless you take a test sample and have Blackstone analayz it.

I knew I was going to get a comment about oil analysis, maybe I'll look into it, but carbon soot is obvious , isn't it?

my profile is filled out.

My 03 oil never got black, but the 18 gets black the next day after a change. I've read on here to not worry about it, so I don't.
Just wear some old clothes when you change the rear fuel filter, I had my diesel shower yesterday.

Drain the rear filter into a bag/can before removing. Crack the filter loose with a wrench. Put a Ziplock bag over the filter and spin the filter off. I never spill any fuel this way.

I don’t spill any, either, if it’s properly drained.

Don't scoff at oil analysis. If you think your truck is producing more soot than it should, an oil analysis will help you diagnose any problems. And will alert you to issues you can't see or smell.

I used to think it was a waste of money. Why spend $30 on UOA when i can buy a filter and a few quarts of good oil for that. But i do like knowing what's going on with metals, soot, & fuel dilution as well as acid/base content.

OP, No one has ask ,So I will start the debate, What lube did you use, to replace the Factory Lube?

No matter what lube used its going to turn black in minutes of Driving

Thanks, I'll do that next time, I thought It was drained but when I cracked the filter loose it rained more diesel.
Maybe my locking fuel cap caused an air lock, but will use the ziplock for sure next time.

I thought it was drained also

Same filter, same drain, just a slightly more advantageous location.

With that being said.....my 2014 RAM 3500 DRW was still mess-free IF properly drained.

Same here ,connect a hose ,and drain into a bucket ,no big deal .

Although I highly recommend 28mm six point socket for the front filter not the 1*1/8 :D:p

Both my ‘06 and my ‘14 are black as soon as I start it and check the level. Was told it’s completely normal. I’ll never believe it’s completely normal.
