I did a simple trans fluid/filter change and now the torque converter slips/stalls when cold .

We're leaving tomorrow for a long weekend with our 5th wheel

HELP !!!

2015 2500 4x4

Assuming the right fluid was used and that nothing else was damaged during the process which if all went well is unlikely. I would first check the fluid level at operating temp. Seems to me the manual calls for checking the level warm. If that is good then I would drain and pull the pan and verify that both filters are as they should be. Right one installed properly etc.

First I seem to recall reading that there are two sump filters one is right and the other not sort of old style vs new style some searching on here may yield an answer on that

Secondly I also seem to recall that sometimes the sump filter doesn’t always get inserted fully or that the plastic ring thing it goes into gets buggered up cracked etc.

Outside of having to drain it again those would be easy to check and verify

The O'ring on the filter (flat, not spin on) is probably out of place or cut. If you don't have a big drain pan get a masonry mixing pan at HD or Lowes. They are less than $10 and you can catch all the fluid in a nice clean pan.

thanks Barry!

Last night I was ck'ing the fluid in neutral per the dipstick which is wrong !

I found out on TDR to ck in park, the stick said a hair below full hot at 118 degrees.

I'll see on the way home from work today, it will probably be over full

yes Sir , I picked up that tip off TDR last week , worked great.

I'm thinking I'll be dropping the pan tonight

What brand of filters did you use?

Did you measure the amount of fluid removed so as to have a baseline of fluid to replace?

They look pretty similar from the numbers I found, unless there is some additional additive in ARSC not listed.

The Mobil listed ATF+4.
https://www.mobil.com/english-ca/passenger-vehicle-lube/pds/iocamobil-atf4

ASRC 3309 it is specifically for certain slip-controlled lock-up automatic transmission.

From the Mobil types.

Thanks for your research .

I'm using amsoil original equipment base transmission fluid , says it's compatible with ARSC on the bottle but nothing about atf4.
On their website it says it is compatible so .
I pulled the pan and replaced the filter seal filled it back up and had about 2.5 qts left.
I'm thinking it was over full.
We'll find out in the morning

Yeah I over filled one time made it slip pretty bad. Not a newer one, early 90s, you are fine on that oil.

The ATF+4 from what I have found in the past is a really great cold weather fluid, it's pretty specific to that cold weather spec.

Here is what the data sheet says for your oil.

AMSOIL warrants the use of this product for Chrysler ATF+4® applications above -38°F. Product does not meet the cold temperature requirement of ATF+4 at -40°F. For warranty information, visit www.amsoil.com/warranty.aspx.

That sounds like a TC drain down issue. Happen to 47RE's a lot.
Except the 47RE’s only circulated fluid in neutral. The 68RFE’s circulate fluid in park AND neutral.

I’ve read elsewhere that some aftermarket sump filters developed hairline cracks as they were an inferior filter. It would be a PITA, but it might take some better, OEM filters to fix your problem, OP.

DTT mods fixed the 47RE to circulate fluid in park.
