Well, here's an update on actually using my truck, instead of the latest reflash information. We had to drag the toyhauler to the Sundowner plant in Coleman, OK for some work(long story). The route was I-10, I-20, I-30, 820, 35W, I-35, 82, 75, 48.
As expected, the truck pulls like an animal. When pulling I set the cruise 65-68. Empty 71-72.
Trip Towing Avg. 10.24, Low 9.47, High 10.83
Trip Empty Avg. 14.24, Low 14, High 14.5
Trip Overall 11.85
We don't have DEF at the pump locally, so I did not start out full. I do track my fuel and DEF, and did top off the DEF in Pecos, TX, so to that point the DEF use since new averaged 814.2 mpg. As a WAG, based on eyeballing the gauge, I would say this trip, 50% towing, was likely in the 500 mpg range overall. Just a WAG, though.
To summarize, the truck pulls great, is very comfortable, handles and stops the trailer with ease. The star of the show is the Titan 55 gal tank I had installed. No range anxiety, and stop at your convenience. I can't say I am thrilled with the mpg, as this was a pretty flat route. For reference, my 2500 6.4/66RFE gasser averaged 7.5-8.5 pulling the same trailer. To be fair it was pretty windy on both empty days returning home. The truck now has a bit over 12K miles.
Yes, the trailer is 102". 60 is more(less)than I can bear, excepting adverse conditions. The gasser also had 4.10s, as well, and I towed at the same speed. I was hoping it would be solidly in the 11s. I harbor no illusions of towing in the 15s, etc. I will update the original post with a photo.TFucili
Towing 65-68 and getting 10.24 average you have nothing to complain about! Slow it down to 60 so your RPM is 1,750 and you will get at least 1mpg better.
What is your combined weight and is your RV a wide body?
Solo DRW with 4.10's 71-72mph 14.24 is just fine! Slow to 60 and you will see 1mpg better.
As I have mentioned before to do it again I would get the exact same truck but with 3.42's and AISIN. Solo mileage much better with towing exactly the same as 4.10's.
What did they charge for the TITAN install?
My Ram dealer did the install as soon as the truck rolled off the carrier. I figured since they come with only a small amount of fuel in them it saves having to drain the tank, etc. Titan does not seal the holes in the tank when packing, so I vacuumed and swabbed it out as best I could, and taped the holes shut before I brought it to them for the install.Where did you have the tank installed?
Hopefully the mpg will increase as that seems pretty sorry. It has been a long time since I drove the truck solo but the last time was driving from tempe to North of tucson at 65-70mph, no cruise and 21mpg hand calculated as I do not have the mpg display.
What truck are you driving? Gears SRW/DRW etc.
Yepppppp.....comparison of a 2nd GEN 2500 to a 4th GEN 3500 that weighs in at 8,800 lbs or more, has six tires and wheels, has 400/1000 straight outta the box, 4.10’s, and has a factory GCWR upwards of 40,000 lbs is............”pretty sorry”.The 99, 3:54 gears 2500 automatic. Towing is anywhere from 9-13 depending on terrain, wind etc usually 60-65mph.

Yea the second gens can give good mileage. Your truck is about 7,500# and mine is 10k. That right there makes a big difference.
My 98 12V commuting would get 21-22.
