Decided to do my fuel filters early today... EVIC said I had 20% of life left on them, I'm at 12,000 miles as of now. Started with the rear chassis mounted fuel/water separator... Drained it first, Not a bit of water or debris in the jar, When I got it unscrewed and the filter out I noticed super fine metal flakes floating around in the small amount of fuel left in the cap... Super fine glittery metal shimmering in the sun. It was too hard to get a picture but it was there. We'll see where it goes from here, Not going to bring it to the dealership just yet. I'm tempted to pull the FCA off the CP4 and see if there is any metal bits on the screen. I didn't do the engine mounted filter yet, I'll leave it for now.

If I were you, I would call your Ram service dept and share your info and concerns. They may not be able to do anything unless it actually fails, but mayber there is a diagnostic they can run on it. Can't hurt.

Hope its just wear in stuff. I've asked the question before if anyone found any metal or other material in the first filter and this is the first one to mention it. I have to admit I'm not searching much as I have a 2017, but still am interested in the whole progression.

Please keep us advised on this.

Cheers, Ron

The particles were very very fine and pretty much equal in size... Not like various sized bits left over from the manufacturing processes. If it is the CP4 starting to disintegrate then I guess it may be safe to say that lubricity additives don't work, I've put OptiLube XPD in since I filled the tank for the first time (truck was delivered with a full tank), Never ran out of fuel, Never added DEF to the fuel, Always wiped off the filler nozzle before fueling up AND I've had a Geno's Garage locking fuel cap since day one. On another note.... Man oh man is it a PITA to get that chassis filter unscrewed... Obviously it was assembled dry with no lube on the O-ring, Might as well had red loctite on it.

Fuel Control Actuator. Pump debris will accumulate on it.

Oh boy.......Really beginning to regret my 2020 purchase.......smh..... Where is the FCA and is it easy to remove replace etc?

I just told a fella the other day on a FB board as he was thinking of buying new. I mentioned the CP4 and to be careful since Chrysler was not thinking in their customers best interest when using the CP4, which has a proven history of failure....

Guy's it is not Chrysler who choose the CP4.2 fuel pump for the Cummins engine! It was design decision by Cummins Inc. the CP4.2 is used across all models of the 6.7L CGI engine built at all of there plants. All of the production of the CMEP is shipped to Ram for their diesel trucks but other OME's use the 6.7L engine to. These are built at another pant at a lower horsepower rating for the other OME that use the 6.7L engine.

No, that is not from mine. I just dug up a photo to show the OP an FCA. I am creeping up on 25K miles with fingers crossed.
I’m at 15,000 and changed the filters at 7500. Didn’t notice anything noteworthy in the primary cap, but wasn’t on the lookout. I will be paying close attention on the next change...

From my experience in replacing several snowmobile fuel pumps over the years, fuel dispensers at filling stations will put particles into your fuel. We'd disassemble the fuel pumps (all plastic inside) and find metal particles jamming the pumps. Not saying that's the issue you are having, but it can happen. My strategy right now is that I'm filling my truck from my slip tank exclusively. It's the same tank I fill machinery that costs twice what my truck costs. I have a 10micron water absorbent filter than a 2micron filter after that. I have a while until my next filter change, but up to this point the two changes have shown no metal.

I’ve seen glitter in most of the diesel fuel filters I’ve changed, Ford 6.0, 7.3, my old 12 valve in the preheater bowl, wouldn’t be surprised if I find some in my 19 when I do it this week. Like said pull the FCA and if you see some in there then start to worry.
